what kind (if any) of accident insurance do you have?

Recommended Posts

This will heavily depend on where someone is. In the Netherlands, accident insurance (for yourself) is included in the basic healthcare insurance everyone has. Third-party insurance (if you destroy farmer McNasty's stuff while crashing) is included in the membership of the association. Gear insurance can be bought, if you feel so inclined. I personally have extra accident insurance on my travel insurance, since not all insurers like the idea of us leaping out of aircraft. They seem to think it costs them money...

The only "extra" insurance we've ever gotten is medical evacuation insurance when we are jumping far from home. It would cover (for example) an air ambulance flight to get you from Thailand back to the US if I broke my pelvis or something.

What exactly are you looking for?

Health covers your injuries. Make sure it covers jumping, Many (most?) do.

Life pays when you die. Make sure it covers jumping Some do, some don't.

Disability pays when you get hurt and can't work. Aflac is a well known one. Most don't cover for jumping.

3rd party liability covers damages you do to other peoples stuff. For example, screwing up your landing pattern and ending up plowing into someone's car in the parking lot. USPA membership comes with that. Most places will offer a temp membership to students, and require it for licensed jumpers (you have to be a member to have a license).

Glad to hear you are pursuing AFF. Good luck and have fun.

Make sure you have all the private life insurance you want. I'm a financial advisor and as part of my job, I do a pretty good amount of life insurance sales. I've helped a few skydiving friends. You can get coverage before you become a licensed jumper with no problems. Once you are doing a lot of jumps, most all companies will jack up your rate a ton if you want to purchase coverage (like 6-10x more). There are 2 companies I've found that will give you coverage at a normal price but they exclude skydiving. As far as accident insurance.....health should cover most stuff. I just have my normal health insurance and then of course I have disability insurance which covers me if I can't work. Skydiving is covered because I bought it all before I became a licensed jumper
