Icon I5 Nexgen Container/Canopy Size Question

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I'm aware Aerodyne have their own sizing charts etc but just wanted to ask you guys and gals a quick question. I'm jumping a Spectre 170 in my Icon I5 Nexgen but want to downsize to a Safre 3 149. Is this doable? Aerodyne recommends a 168-1880 Aerodyne canopy but, what about a Safire 149? Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks!

I have the same container and I asked my rigger even to put a 168er Pilot ZPX in and he replied that I can do it, but it is a little bit too loose and it is better to choose a ZP 168er. A 149er would be even more loose and Aerodyne clearly recommends a I4. I personally would not do it.

I have had as small as a 118 Mamba in an I5.

It worked but it really wasn't a great setup, too loose.

Now I have a 140 Pilot in my I5 with Dacron lines.

What is the container DOM?

Recently Aerodyne changed sizing on their containers. (Or at least, changed their recommendations for main canopy sizes.)

Oldish nexgen sizing is different from Icon V/A. Even though they have a "nexgen" manual with sizing for Icon V/A.

For example, I have a DOM 2014 I5 Nexgen that is recommended for 150-170 main.

However, new I5 Icon V/A (which Aerodyne also interchangeably refers to as "Nexgen") recommend 170-190.

Proof: Here's Aerodyne's website in 2014:

vs now (page 10):

I have a Sabre2 150 in my I5, and it fits fine. Definitely the smallest I want to go though in it.

Go figure. Kinda annoying. Still love Aerodyne containers though.
