Francis Rogallo, 97, inventor of the Rogallo wing

Parachutes haven't looked like Rogallo's original wing in a very long time, but we might not have modern canopies if it weren't for this man. Check out the Skydiving History section for photos.

The full obituary on the NY Times web site points out that Rogallo was an active hang glider until he was 80 years old.

Francis Rogallo, an aeronautical engineer who, beginning with a model made from a kitchen curtain, designed the wing that led to hang gliding, paragliding, sport parachuting and stunt kite flying, died Tuesday at his home in Southern Shores, N.C. He was 97.
