Shannon Neal 6/6/90 - 8/26/08

Recommended Posts

Shannon was laid to rest yesterday at the cemetery in Ft. Sam Houston.
With her love of horses, we checked to see if her casket could be brought in on a caisson - unfortunately, that is only for military. As her casket was brought into the burial shelter, I looked up and what did I see but a caisson and escort bringing another soldier home - so, in a sense, she DID get her horses.

On the last day of school, Shannon would wear an old, worn-out pair of jeans and a plain t-shirt and have all the kids sign them. We did the same thing with her casket - a plain, pewter-silver design.

It was COVERED with notes to Shannon from her friends and classmates saying goodbye. Sitting in the front row of the chapel, I could see the peace on the faces of her friends as they would finish.

The line of cars in the procession to the cemetery was over a half-mile long - not too bad for a little-city country girl!

Mike, I cried when I read this. What a beautiful celebration for a beautiful girl.

My thoughts are with you and to everyone affected by this.

Hugs and love,
'Shell

Gosh, what a horrible tragedy. I could never imagine going through something like this. It is my worst fear. I am so sorry for yours and your family's loss. I hope you are able to find some kind of peace and keep Shannon's memories alive.

Peace and strength to you and yours.

Thank you all so much - your words and prayers have been a tremendous help to me and to my family.

I have my good moments and bad, but remembering the good times helps.

Again, thank you all.

With much love,

She was taking some friends home from school and rolled her truck. She and another person were ejected from the vehicle. Shannon died at the scene. The young man was injured but is stable.

I'm so sorry about your loss. I can only offer my thoughts of support for you and your family. Hang in there.

I'm thinking of you guys too, although you don't know me. I guess our little skydiver community is like that.

I like the sentiment of the poem "I'm not there" ny Mary Elizabeth Frye. Maybe it'll help some, I hope so.

Don

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Mike,

I wish for you and your family to have strength in your hearts. I hope that you are showered with her wonderful memories forever. Words cannot describe my condolences for your loss last year.

Does anyone else find it funny that we made a SPORT out of an EMERGENCY PROCEDURE?!?!
