So, identifying the man by his religion and race, one different from white working class Americans, means he would be an inappropriate choice? Only fair skinned Americans need apply? I'm assuming you are speaking of Minnesota congressman Keith Ellison. (kind of a white sounding name after 8 years of BHO). Here's what Minnesota Public Radio is saying about the story. http://www.mprnews.org/story/2016/11/14/ellison-announces-democratic-national-committee-bidAlways remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. quade 4 #5 November 15, 2016 Pardon my French, but I'm going to go off on a little rant here. Ya know what kind of pisses me off in the coverage of the aftermath of this cluster fuck? It's the media saying it is "the white working class" that elected Trump. No. It wasn't. I'm reasonably certain I just finished my 12 hour day. It was pretty much the same as a lot of people I know. We all fucking work for a living. We're not the rich. We're not the poor. We're snowy fucking white, we work for a god damn living, and I'm reasonably sure most of us didn't vote for Trump. And that's not just the specific office I worked in today, but a lot of offices, and small business, across a good number of states. Just not the states so damn Republican they would have voted for virtually anyone other than Hillary. And not the swing states. Are they suggesting a state like California, with the 8th largest economy on the planet doesn't fucking work?quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
brenthutch 418 #6 November 15, 2016 Nobody is saying that California doesn't work, I am saying that it just doesn't count. How many times did HRC or Trump campaign there? It is a reliably blue state, in much the way Texas is reliably red. The difference is made in the purple states. BTW I appreciate your rant, it chaps me when the "hard working American" monicker is applied to folks who are neither hard working nor American. And the argument for the electoral college is what, again? The Canadian Parliamentary system, (modeled after England's) allows for a Prime Minister from a party with less than 40% popular support to govern with more real power than a POTUS has. The PM only has to get elected in his riding, and at a party convention. The US system with it's Electoral College is not perfect flawless democracy, but it is far more so that Canada's or the UK's. Each candidate plays by the same rules and knows them in advance. Trump's win is unfortunate, but legitimate.Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Each candidate plays by the same rules and knows them in advance. Trump's win is unfortunate, but legitimate. I think the issue here is an incomplete understanding of the electoral college as designed and what it has become. The electoral college was intended to have each of its electors vote however they want. That went out the door about 10 years after it went into place when states started binding their electors to each state's individual popular vote. As originally intended it tried to spread the power among the states. As it has evolved it effectively removed power from more populous states and has over emphasized smaller "swing" states from a strictly game theory point of view. High population states like California (which is more likely to vote Democrat) and Texas (which is more likely to vote Republican) are essentially taken out of the equation. It's a messed up system which tends to be promoted by those who it benefits depending on the particular election, so it's almost certain not to be changed, but it's a fucked up system you'd never put into place today if you were starting from scratch because it just doesn't make sense in the 21st century.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
JerryBaumchen 1,260 #10 November 15, 2016 Hi Paul, Quote it just doesn't make sense in the 21st century Regardless of one's party preference, IMO it is an antiquated system that should be changed to a simple majority vote. rehmwa 2 #11 November 15, 2016 JerryBaumchenIMO it is an antiquated system that should be changed to a simple majority vote. IMO - anyone serious about it would start locally - since the electoral votes belong to the states, then the place to start is to convince your specific state to move to proportional disty of their electoral votes if enough states go that route, maybe the rest flip too - then it's a more natural step to straight popular vote Having the fed hijack ANOTHER right over the states? going straight there? C'mon - it's not serious, it's just whining under the guise of a fake cause. ... I think most of the people who have been saying for decades that the electoral college is dysfunctional realize it's just not going to happen at the federal level due to Constitutional issues. To wit, it would literally take an Amendment to the US Constitution to do it, and since whoever gets the power tends to stay in power it's extraordinarily unlikely it would ever get a 2/3rds in one of the houses of Congress or the 3/4th of states to ratify. There are other ways to get around it. One such method is the "National Popular Vote Interstate Compact." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compactquade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

It's not just the 'white working class' but the 'uneducated white working class'. Have a friend who lives in a very nice house ($500k+) and was mowing his yard and one of the poll takers stopped and asked if he could ask a few questions. The person taking the poll assumed my friend was the "help" by mowing the yard and without asking, the pollster proceeded to check off the "White", "Single", "Uneducated" and "Blue Collar" boxes without confirming any of information. So he did what any normal person would do that felt slighted by seeing that - he totally filled the pollster with a bunch of misinformation. The other issue that my friend had with the pollster - they were Pro-Clinton and very Pro-Democrat and did not hide that fact. So, I can only imagine how many other people said, "screw you - I'm not telling your condescending ass anything that will be remotely truthful."
