Donald Trump... Why??

Recommended Posts

Here's some media based opinions on the chap from several countries in case it might interest you:

A poll here on SC - from around 270+ people - indicates he's considerably more popular for the vote than Hilary.

Could someone (who's not insane) please educate me as to why you'd vote for Donald over Hilary? It's a genuine question based around the fairly common - and international - perception he's a bit of a nut-job, whereas Hilary is commonly perceived as being considerably more stable; far more experienced; better for America.

The extent of his popularity in America genuinely surprises me.

SC is not a valid representative sample of the US population as a whole. SC (skydiving in the US in general too) skews white, male, ex-military, Republican. As I said, it's not a representative sample.

He's more popular than I believe he has any right to be, but not so popular as to be elected by the American voters. Some Republican voters would vote for the rotting corpse of a dead dog rather than cast a vote for a Democrat. I get that too, but it's simply not enough to win 270 Electoral College votes.

Yes Quade, you're correct: SC is not a representative sample of the US population as a whole, so I assume you'll perhaps help me address and question the nation as whole? Or can I just ask the question here? I'm only asking - at best - for a couple of Trump voters opinions to be honest.

Thanks for your opinion on the matter though - appreciate it. I gather you think some Republican voters are pretty hardcore Republican, and will therefore vote for their candidate whoever he or she might be? That makes some kind of sense. But it also indicates (potentially) a lack of rationality, on behalf of the voter. What if the candidate was - weirdly - Obama's long lost twin brother, for example?

SC, like skydiving in general is dominated by white males, many with military backgrounds. There are very few black skydivers in America. It would be wrong to say that all these white males are conservatives, but there is a tendency there. As a rule, this group of Americans don't vote Democrat, and they especially dislike HRC.

So, faced with only two choices, many of them would choose Trump. They know his shortcomings, but they don't want another Democrat as POTUS. There is a real turning point in social policy coming soon in the US, and it could go either way. A truly conservative POTUS, along with Republican majorities in both houses, would enable a change in direction that these people are longing for.

Trump is not a true conservative, but he is far more so than HRC. You need only to look as far as the Supreme Court to see just how important this election is.

Having Trump as the nominee is a disaster for the Republican agenda and a Godsend for Liberals. And in my opinion the nation as well. But as I am Canadian, my opinion counts little at all.

Well, thanks for sharing it, nevertheless. It remains beyond me why he could possibly be a choice, whatever ones political affiliation. IMO Trump's potential for disaster seems to transcend any well wished desire for a Republican majority.

Something else to consider is that poll was posted on Mar 2, 2016.
We can only vote once, and we can't change our votes.
A hell of a lot has happened since Mar 2.
Frankly, I think the results of that poll are meaningless.

Ummm...skydiving in general may fit your description above but to say SC is mostly conservative is wrong unless there is some silent majority of which I'm not aware.

In context, I dunno. A majority from the 2nd March indicated a preference for Trump, which at least indicates some people here might vote for him.

I'm just curious as to why.

Judging by the earlier poll results I'd say there is.

I have a theory on why Trump has become a natipnal figure in our politics.

Trump has name recognition. He alludes that he is an ultra successful businessman. He has a hot wife and good looking kids. Now stay with me here...

After eight years of Obama bashing, for no other reason than he is a black democrat, that brought the ACA like he promised, and congress dragging Hillary Clinton through endless Benghazi investigations, the "people" want something different.

Click bait websites have the Muslims invading us, the government stealing all of our guns and Christians being executed on the street. The black man is getting uppity with BLM, and of course 'Merica!

During the GOP clown car primary, Trump stood out. No one wanted another Bush. Christie is creepy in a mafia kind of way. Kasich is as exciting as tapioca pudding. Rubio was a little smarmy bitch. Carly looked like she just ate a sour pickle and Cruz scares the shit out of everyone that isn't a total religious nutter.

The more outlandish shit Trump said, the more his base ate it up. Because after years of being told how crappy America is, a lot of people actually started believing that BS. And our congress sucks monkey balls so badly, the people want change. Even if it is the orange man.

People are tired of the run of the mill politicians and Trump is the spicy hot sauce the people needed. Not all of the people, just certain people.

If you watch Fox News and Hannity, read Breitbart and listen to Rush or Savage, you would be holed up in Georgia with Ron. It's pretty scary shit they peddle.

We have a nation that is only educated by sound bites. I have older friends that still think Obama is taking away their guns.

Add in an NFL player kneeling, and certain people are losing their collective minds.

So here is Trump, the white guy, with casinos, helicopters, jets and a hot trophy wife, telling them everything they want to hear, without a clue about anything that is real policy, and the people are eating it up. 'cuz "MERICA!

As for his running mate. Hillary Clinton has shot herself in both feet over a number of issues over the years. The GOP has always had it out for the Clintons, as the Dems have had it out for the Bush family.

So we have never, ever seen the likes of Donald Trump on the national stage. There have been plenty of local city and state nutters elected to office, but no one this outlandish has ever made it to the big show.

Kasich is as exciting as tapioca pudding.

Even if I didn't like tapioca pudding, it would still be more appetizing than a turd sandwich. Quite a few of the Republican primary candidates (Kasich included) would have done a competent job, even if I don't agree with their positions on much of anything.

I like your thinking. All those things are factors. Along with winner take all primaries and the fact that no one else stood out in an inspirational way. I know for sure that academics will be studying that GOP primary for years.

Thanks for that Grimmie.

Your explanation reminds me a little of a certain socialist politician over here, who seems to be working his popularity around a general (and national) political apathy, whilst massively ill-suited to the role as opposition leader.

I think it'd be easy to claim there's more important things than spicy hot sauce, as you put it, but then it seems I'd also be wrong.

Cheers.

Trump can't be bought.

Trump can't be bullied.

Trump can't be blackmailed for political favors.

Hi vortex,

Quote

It surprises me also. But then I got to thinking more about it.

At 76 I am one of the oldest people on here; I go back quite a ways.

Under LBJ we had two pieces of legislation that changed this country:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_Rights_Act_of_1965

Prior to these two acts, we had what was known as the Solid South. These are the states in the southeastern US. They were virtually 100% in the back pocket of the Democratic Party. By 1968, Richard Nixon had developed his Southern Strategy; he promised them a Supreme Court justice that would turn things around. He failed. However, this part of the US was no longer Democratic, they were now solid Republican.

With the election of Barak Obama, these folks saw the 'browning' of America and it scared them, really scared them. Now, along comes Trump; who promises them a 'go back to what we knew and loved' time. They have swallowed it hook, line & sinker. The middle class jobs that went away with globalization are never coming back. In 1958, when I came out of high school, you could find a job ( with no training what so ever ) and stay there for the rest of your life. You were probably in a union ( wages & benefits ) which also offered a modest retirement to go along with your Social Security. Union membership is way down. The jobs being created today are not union jobs.

The grunt labor industries are gone for good; steel mills, the textile industries, the auto industry, etc. Automation continues to replace the 'working man.' Progress tells us that this trend will continue.

Today, someone with only a high school education has no real future; you will need at least a 2-yr community college degree to even get in the door for a job.

Or, I could be completely wrong and have no idea of just what in the H*** is going on.

I thought you waved the white flag a long time ago because you just couldn't stomach all of the liberals here. Well, we're always here to provide the logical ass whoopings that you know you just can't resist. Come back more often.

Extremely well thought out, as would be expected for a Trump supporter.

I would add to the list "Trump can't be president."
