Should prostitution be legalized and regulated?

No, it would take the fun out of the high risk.

The term"sex trade worker" has always made me choke. Can't we just call it what it is? I'm pretty conflicted on this one myself. Many, but not all hookers are victims. My gut tells me that hooking is not honest work, my brain tells me to try to be more understanding. But I just can't quite find a way to respect the act of selling such an intimate act for cash.

On the other hand, prohibition has never been effective, and never will. So in the end I support legalization for the same reason as Bill. The safety of extremely vulnerable women.

Fully agree with that statement.

I've never understood it either.
Not a product I'd ever be interested in and I think it's a terrible thing when they are victims.
I would expect legalization would help the ones that are.
I've pretty much disagreed with most moral or sin based laws as well given they don't have much success.

Pssst!
It's a service, not a product;
If it was a product, that would mean you could take it home and keep it.

You do, it is called a wife and you will pay for the rest of your life....as will she.

That's a big part of what makes it dirty. Lots of people do bring part of it home to keep! The "service" that keeps on giving.

I'm fully invested in this system.
I'll never understand how I landed this one. :P

I still like to recall one of my Navy buddies' experience in Vallejo, CA.
Meets a girl looking for "dates" at a local bar.
Within a few days an outbreak starts in his mouth.
He had one of the worst cases of STD's the hospital had seen.
I knew the basics from sex ed class about the herp, but god damn that was terrifying.
What happened to his body was sad, scary, and disgusting.
I don't think he ever knew his shipmates were even visiting him....never did hear what happened to him after he was dropped from classes and started a medical discharge process.

I took that like the chemical drug lesson from my brother's experience. ;)

I _highly_ doubt many people on this forum are talking about legalizing child prostitution or sex slaves (aka human trafficking).

I'm relatively certain all are talking about good old regular adult prostitution where the hookers aren't being held captive and are earning money with their bodies of their own free will.

Well I suppose the 9 in agreement to legalize must not have daughters they love. So I suppose it's OK with them to do unto other men's daughters they would not want other men to do to their own.

What a bunch of SICK, Worthless, Individuals.

I voted in favour and I have a daughter. I would prefer she doesn't become a prostitute, or a stripper, or a porn actress or a trophy wife, or many other outcomes that are possibilities.

Doesn't mean I think it should be illegal.

I believe Denmark has made it a crime to patronize a prostitute, and the Danes have a reputation of being a very sexually "enlightened" people. It's definitely time to stop criminalizing the women, but it's not the "victimless" occupation it's portrayed to be.

I love my daughter very much. She is a very successful middle school teacher. Why do you think anyone's daughter makes a decision to become a prostitute based on it's legality? We are talking about legalization, not making it respectable.

I'm not clear on this. Are you calling me a sick worthless individual? Just because I favour not making criminals out of prostitutes?

Prostitution among consenting adults should be legal. Kidnapping, child abuse, and sexual assault are already illegal and should remain so.

>Well I suppose the 9 in agreement to legalize must not have daughters they love.

And I guess the 4 who agree would prefer to live under Sharia Law, where clerics tell your daughters what they can and can't do with their bodies.

Exodus 21:7-11New Living Translation (NLT)

7 “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. 8 If she does not satisfy her owner, he must allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. 9 But if the slave’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave but as a daughter.

10 “If a man who has married a slave wife takes another wife for himself, he must not neglect the rights of the first wife to food, clothing, and sexual intimacy. 11 If he fails in any of these three obligations, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment.

The challenge, and the primary non emotional argument used by those opposing, is that legalization gives cover to these criminal acts. And is there action that can be taken for the murky cases of indentured servitude? Particularly when the women in question are immigrating illegally, they aren't in a position to bear witness - it's keep hooking, or get deported.

Yes and no.

Legalizing would "shine the light" on the activities. It would make it possible for prostitutes to go to the cops without fear of prosecution (doesn't help the illegal immigrants all that much, though).

It would bring it out into the open, and clean up the business (in a few different ways.

And tbrown commented about Denmark, saying (more or less) that selling was legal, but buying wasn't.

Not quite. Buying and selling are legal. Promoting or procuring (operating a brother or pimping) are not. I had to look it up.

Agreed. But by making prostitution illegal, pimps can use the illegality to keep their prostitutes under control just as effectively. While legalizing prostitution does not solve the entire problem, it solves the problem for _most_ women.
