Obama's legacy

Another example I just saw this morning: The EpiPen

... since buying the rights to the device nine years ago, the pharmaceutical company Mylan has pushed a relentless series of price hikes that has seen the cost of the device go from an average of about $50 in 2004 to more than $300 each today.
...
Between 2011 and 2014, television advertising skyrocketed from $4.8 million to $35.2 million.
...
The price of the device has been steadily increased -- by 32 percent in the past year alone -- but not because the cost of the raw materials was increasing (a typical dose of epinephrine still costs about a dollar). The profit margin of the EpiPen was 9 percent in 2008. Today it's 55 percent.

But don't worry, when the inevitable financial collapse comes your country will be forced to fix it.

Ya, we'll just become part of a larger global economy where you guys are forced to pay for it, one way or another. How else are we gonna afford the healthcare of 80 million people that don't work, along with the other 10 million that can't find a job or refuse to work?

That's like 3 times your total population - is it even fathomable?

WWJD?

I don't know - I don't recall anything in scripture about creating money ex nihilo - but I hear the Fed is pretty good at it.

We were talking about how to pay for healthcare. Do you expect doctors to get paid with Holy Mackerel?

If you* (or anyone else here) think the obscene cost of your healthcare is due to quality, I've got a bridge to sell you... ;)

There are great hospitals in the US, Germany, Canada, Japan and elsewhere. Don't think that the average hospital in the US that advertises how great they are. Are that great.

Advertising and promotion doesn't make best. Americans have crossed the border for a decade now to buy cheap drugs in Canada. Because the US pharma industry has bought off congress and the price is 1/3 to 1/2 less in Canada because of collective bargaining with that same industry.

The average hospital in France, Canada, England is absolutely as good as the average US one. The US one will have you under a MRI, have all the blood tests back in 24 hours. Whereas the average French or Canadian one would take a couple days on the tests and pass on the MRI. The bill 1/3. The medical outcome? The same treatment profile.

I was talking to a guy on a dive boat last winter in Cozumel. A guy from Montana who was a carpenter/contractor had just had a complete set of dental implants done in Mexico. He was ecstatic about the results and service. At 25% the amount a Montana specialist had quoted him.

Medical tourism is coming of age. Expectantly so now that the populations of western economies are ageing. Pardon the pun!
Malpractice insurance in the US is going to be a problem. So are overprescribed, unnecessary procedures.

I will concede that other countries may best us in a contest of mediocrity but in a contest of excellence, we have no peers.

That, sir , depends on the subject.
As a whole, I think we are NOW a distant 3rd or 4th

But the last two presidencies did that.

We still have a way out. We just can NOT let either of the two options we have into office.

It is true. The 1% from Canada go to the USA to experience the best of care. But it won't help you. You can't afford it. If you get sick the co-pays will likely bankrupt you.

I see that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan just returned home after his open heart surgery in London. And not the London in Kentucky, Ohio, Arkansas, Texas or West Virginia.

Oh, well, then, as long as you have yours, it's OK.

Yes Wendy, I've got mine, and if everyone else got theirs, we would be in a much better place. It can be done, I did it.
My high school graduation gift was some soft luggage and a watch; luggage to pack up my shit and a watch so I would not miss my bus. Five days after graduating high school, I was gone. No car, no college, no money. 34 years later, and after a lot of hard work and even more deferred gratification, I am semi-retired and living comfortably. Why? Because I had to. I had no trust fund to fall back on, no welfare check, I could not even rely on my wit, charm and intelligence (as Kallend and BillV are fond of pointing out I am bereft of all of three), I just worked hard, SAVED and INVESTED. It's not that hard. Take the money from a daily pack of cigarettes and a six pack of beer and save/invest it. Forgo the new BMW and drive a ten year old used Honda if you want a Mercedes in the future.

You or someone else may have the ability to do that. But not if you happen to have the misfortune of having bad health somewhere along your journey. And even now, if you get seriously ill all your hard work will go down the tubes quickly. You will exhaust whatever insurance you have and then you will drain your bank account and have to sell your assets. It happens all the time to good successful people like you. You are not special, the system will chew you up and spit you out.

Yeah, I did most of that stuff, too, including paying most of my own way through private university. I just don't think that just because something is easy for me, it'll be easy for everyone else, or that not being just like me makes one unworthy or stupid.

If nothing else, I can spell, but until it reaches the level of unintelligible, I still try to see what someone who can't is saying.

I was lucky enough to be issued good parents, good health, and reasonable intelligence when I was born. I wasn't issued above-average stick-to-it-iveness, but the others made up for it. Not everyone gets those.

Some can do it. Maybe anyone can do it. But everyone cannot do it. The system does not work that way.

Since brenthutch makes it clear that in his mind it's all about him and anyone who doesn't make it is a loser, then in that context his response makes sense.
