Skywriters over the Rose Parade

That impressed me as well;
It looks like an old dot matrix printer scaled waaay up.
I think they said in the audio it was 6 planes in formation to create it.

So while listening to NPR the other day I learned that the Trump campaign has spent virtually no money on advertising. Meaning that they spend money on things like t-shirts and pins but not radio or tv adds. It also means that unlike his opponents, Trump has gained and maintained his nominal lead based almost exclusively on free publicity, such as the media circuses that ensue every time he says something idiotic. Now here's a question for whoever thought this was s good idea. How is giving him a sky full of free publicity hurting him in any way?

It's called "Skytyping."

And the comparison to an old dot matrix printer is pretty close.

Yep. Many years ago a strip club opened up here in central Florida. A local Baptist preacher showed up with his crowd in a nearby shopping center parking lot just about the same time every night. You could hear his ranting over his megaphone for a couple of hours every night for weeks. Sometimes, if conditions were right, you could here him legibly for a couple of miles. I wouldn't be surprised if the strip joint was paying him.

>Skytyping in SoCal has been a thing for decades along with banner tow.

It's been a thing in NY for at least 40 years. I think it was first developed in the 1950's. All you need is a tape recorder, a radio and a bunch of tone decoders.
