We're not born good or evil. We are born with greed, compassion, anger, love, jealousy and forgiveness inherent in us. How we shape those basic drives into a higher morality determines whether we are "good" or "evil" (depending on how you define those words.)

Hmm. I've seen exactly that play out for a bit* and no one got seriously hurt/tortured/killed. There was a lot of crying and yipping, but both toddlers and puppies (both very social creatures) are good at understanding distress in another similar animal.

Almost invariably the crying and yipping brings a parent, who sees chaos and thinks "oh thank God I intervened or the puppy would have gotten hurt!" But that's because their instincts in terms of what noises mean distress are similar to (although more refined) than a toddler's.

I agree that even the yipping doesn't mean evil; it just means they don't know how to play with a dog.

(* - a group of cousins with a new puppy. They played inside with it and almost immediately got yelled at for pulling on the puppy's ears or something. Then they went outside and repeated that, without the parents. There were four or five pulls before the kids associated the yipping with what they were doing and then they stopped.)

Last October there was a story in the Onion:

Americans Hopeful This Will Be Last Mass Shooting Before They Stop On Their Own For No Reason

10/02/17 1:20pm

WASHINGTON—Expressing a sense of guarded optimism that the latest incident of gun violence that left 58 dead and 500 injured in Las Vegas would be a turning point for the nation, Americans across the country confirmed Monday they were hopeful this would be the last mass shooting before all such occurrences stopped on their own for no reason at all. “After something as horrific as what happened in Las Vegas, we’re all just hoping that now these terrible shootings will stop once and for all without circumstances changing in any way or any of us taking even the slightest amount of action in response,” said Harrisburg, PA resident David Snyder, echoing the sentiments of tens of millions of citizens from coast to coast who told reporters they were confident that, after living through the most deadly mass shooting in modern American history and taking no material steps to change gun laws, reevaluate safety standards, increase access to mental health care, or even have a national conversation about how mass shootings could be avoided in the future, tragedies of this kind would at long last come to an end.
===============================

But this time things are a little different. We HAVE made changes. Specifically, we've cut funding for dealing with school violence and made it easier for the mentally disturbed to get weapons.

School safety money would be slashed in Trump budget

By KIMBERLY HEFLING 02/15/2018 0
Politico

Two days before the school shooting in Florida that left 17 dead, the Trump administration proposed cutting millions in federal education programs meant to help prevent crime in schools and assist them in recovery from tragedies.

Funds targeted for reduction or elimination in the Trump administration's fiscal 2019 request have helped pay for counselors in schools and violence prevention programs. Such funds were used for mental health aid for students and teachers in the Newtown, Conn., school district following the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012.

Trump Undid Obama Rule That Added Mentally Ill People to Gun Check Register
By KIRSTEN KOROSEC February 15, 2018
Fortune

President Donald Trump’s tweet Thursday highlighting the mental illness of the man charged in the deadly mass shooting at a Florida high school has angered gun control advocates who point to an Obama-era gun checks regulation he repealed last year.

“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!,” Trump wrote in the tweet.

The tweet suggests the man, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz who is the suspected gunman, should have been reported. (He was by at least one man, who reported him to the FBI.) The tweet also sparked an outcry amongst gun control advocates who noted that Trump repealed an initiative last February that that would have made it harder for people with mental illness to buy a gun.

The Obama-era regulation, which was enacted after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, would have required the Social Security Administration to send records of beneficiaries with severe mental disabilities to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The measure would have affected about 75,000 people found mentally incapable of managing their financial affairs.

Some parents are. Some parents are just ok and some parents are the absolute worst.

That's the problem with parents, anyone can become one. There are no tests for admission and no disqualifying factors either. The guy who's not allowed to work as a janitor within 4 miles of a school building can be a parent.

Don't get me wrong, some parents are absolutely committed to giving their kids the best possible education and preparation for the life ahead of them. But you're kidding yourself if you don't think that some of them are just like Janice in accounting.

Lenient parenting is to blame for someone killing a bunch of classmates in a school? I didn't think we'd run through the barrel of bullshit this quickly but we're obviously scraping the bottom of it.

Ron, do you think the US has worse parenting than every other developed country in the world?

Seems to me the solution is rather simple. We guard the President with armed men...some banks have armed guards...just employ veterans who are armed and place them in the schools. Shooters might think twice if they know someone who knows what they're doing will be shooting back.

*********>I wonder if we started teaching our children morality based on a real loving God with a
>plan of salvation? I wonder if that would help them deal with their anger, anxiety,
>depression and guilt as they grow into adulthood? I wonder if they would then be better
>equipped to handle maturational, situational and emotional crises?

It would probably help some, because religion provides a pre-packaged morality with a very big stick (i.e. "you'll go to hell" or some equivalent punishment) to enforce it - and some people respond well to such packaged moralities and dire threats.

It would probably hurt some, because many religions provide a "get out of jail free" card that they can use to justify selfish and egocentric decisions. Also, by not having to figure out their own morality at a young age, they can reach a point where the simple pre-packaged moralities provided by their church no longer work in the real world - and they are left adrift, unpracticed at deciding right and wrong for themselves.

For most people it probably won't make much difference; they will have an internal morality not easily swayed by religious or secular edicts.

We are born evil.

Absolute rubbish.

To put it in perspective, put a kitten or a puppy in a room with a toddler, say 1-2 years old, and give him/her ZERO instructions on how to treat it. Betcha more often than not the animal ends up getting hurt/tortured/killed.

Even then, it's not that they were born evil, they just didn't know any better. Their actions could be seen as evil to some.

To the best of my knowledge, no-one is born a toddler 1-2 years old.

I saw that meme on FB.
The school had an armed guard on duty. I guess one wasn't enough. Maybe one per room? One per door? Snipers on the roof of the gym?

They don't need armed guards at schools in the UK, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Belgium.... and other western developed nations to prevent shooting massacres.

Is it because they don't have any mental illness in those places? Or could it POSSIBLY be that they have sensible gun laws?

***Seems to me the solution is rather simple. We guard the President with armed men...some banks have armed guards...just employ veterans who are armed and place them in the schools. Shooters might think twice if they know someone who knows what they're doing will be shooting back.

I agree and in addition, the teachers should be instructed in small arms and should carry concealed.

Children today are not stupid. Furthermore everyone knows you don't bring a sidearm to a rifle-fight! If the mentally ill children are untreated because tax breaks are necessary for Wall Street and billionaires. Then bring AR-15's to schools the teachers will be outgunned.

Just like the battle law enforcement went through a couple years ago to get Ar-15's and M-4's in the squad car. Teachers need proper equipment. Start them out right with a proper level lV helmet, Esapi body armor and Ar-15's.We can't let teachers be outgunned in America.

Even Breitbart knows your argument lacks attention to the specific needs of teachers. Especially as the republicans are set to pass new national reciprocity concealed carry:

You're a veteran, right? GO DO THAT. You can volunteer in many capacities at a school and even if you don't have a gun you can stand watch.

I'm absolutely serious, I'm sure there's a school near you, I'm sure there's a PTA and I'm VERY sure they would be happy to have a program in which people at the very least stood watch purely for the purpose of keeping an eye on suspicious people entering or walking through the school.

School budgets are already stretched thin to the point that teachers buy classroom supplies from their own pockets in many school districts. Now you want to add more overhead that has zilch to do with actual education.

Are Eric Rudolph or Tim McVeigh still available?

There's nothing special about veterans that especially qualifies them to protect civilians in a non-combat zone. Given the number of school/mass shooters who kill themselves, it seems naïve to believe the threat of being shot would frighten them into inaction.

How many hours a week should the school devote to target practice for the teachers? Because I'm sure you don't think that unpracticed civilians shooting at small targets who would be firing back in a room full of non-combatants would end well.

They should probably have PT each morning as well. To make sure they're ready for an emergency.

I guess you're all correct. This why nothing gets done. Liberals demand action, but only if it's the action they desire.

Taking the right action is more important that just taking action.
If someone has a bad idea it should n't be put into practice just because it's an idea.

That's how we've been left with a load a meaningless legislation around ammo, magazines and modifications. Weapon types will be next, and it's just as meaningless.

Are you willing to go to your local school and volunteer RIGHT NOW? Maybe next month? Seriously, you probably can get involved with your local PTA and make it happen.

I'm not asking this rhetorically or hypothetically. Are you going to do this?
