Not here. They just have to walk into any gun show and find a private seller.

It's so sad to see you say something like this Bll! Even if you meant it tongue-in-cheek.

And if you do really believe this, then your knowledge of what really is going on has to be put into question.

Bob_Church just said "I can drive to any one of three or four friend's homes and pick up a couple of guns in less than half an hour."
That's a direct quote...

The inability (or in your case IIRC outright refusal) to secure your guns properly is a huge part of the problem.
If I could trust everyone to ALWAYS secure their guns then I wouldn't be such an advocate of restrictions on what you can legally own, but since people can't manage themselves then it's up to the government to do it for them...

If someone can get access to your guns without the use of serious cutting equipment and a lot of time then you're part of the problem.

The best solution I've heard is something I heard on here - a cavity behind drywall that only you know is there.
Keep the guns you practice with locked up at a firing range and keep your home defense solution behind a bit of drywall that you need to knock through to access.

Nobody knows it's there, and because you have to damage your wall to get at it you're less likely to play around with it when you're drunk, but it's also extremely accessible.

I thought it was a genius idea.

If your (not you, specifically, Bob) gun is easier to steal than a big-screen television, you are not a responsible gun owner.

[Gun laws] do what little good they do, but trying to solve the problem with more or different laws is like polishing a turd. It's just not going to get any shinier.

The thing is that states with more gun laws do tend to have lower gun crime rates. The laws do work, at least to some non-trivial extent.

It is 100% true (which means, of course, that you won't believe it.)

Here's a direct quote from the ATF site:

"Any person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of the State where he resides as long as he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law."

So want a gun? Walk in to any gun show, find a private seller (i.e. not an FFL) put your money on the table and walk out with a gun.

Sometimes it isn't that difficult. I was talking about stealing them, but if you've got the cash there are other options. I know I posted this before but I think it's important to remember that we don't really know how often this sort of thing is going on.
This is why I think plans that involve keeping people in the US from getting a gun don't have any chance of succeeding. Lots of guns is a reality here and we have to look for other ways of dealing with the problem. That is, unless we drastically seize and melt down over 95% of the guns that already exist and shut down production. But the thing to remember then is we're talking about having the people who don't like guns take them away from the people who have guns. I can see a snag there.

Taking them will never work, will never happen. The degree to which the government would have to invade people's lives would create the very thing that the amendment was written to defend against. It's better to think in the long term and limit sales to FFL's, penalize for illegal sales, etc. For those guns that are out there that gain further restrictions (assault rifles) they would have to be grandfathered to existing owners and any sale would enter it into the legal market via an FFL (just like they do with machine guns). People eventually get rid of their illegal weapons by destroying them or turning them in. I've known a few perfectly respectable people who had illegal weapons of unknown origin and they eventually decided they needed to retire it via a commercial grinder. It'll take some time but they go out of circulation. We'll definitely see some under the table sales but that's no different than what we see now.

Of course there has been another shooting at a school since your last post, with 2 children injured in that event. Because it wasn't a massacre it doesn't make the news.

Speaking of kids getting guns

"CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago firefighter has been charged with gun violations after his 14-year-old daughter posted a photo of herself online posing with his assault-style rifle.

The photo carried a message: "Don't worry, I won't shoot up Lane," referring to Chicago's Lane Tech College Prep High School. It's unclear when she posted the picture.

The Chicago Tribune says the 60-year-old firefighter was cited for failing to secure a weapon from a minor and possessing an assault rifle in the city. His daughter hasn't been charged.

Security at Lane Tech called police after the photo appeared on Snapchat. It isn't clear if the girl is a student at the school.

Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Emily Bolton says there was no credible threat. She says families were assured in a letter Wednesday."

Well Then! I'll see your (failure of a) guilt trip, and raise you a Mother outside of a private school, taking care of a Felonious POS; while having an unarmed and completely useless security guard present.

BUT! She has clearly been trained to the level of Rambo... so this doesn't actually count, right?

Clearly not something your "average" citizen of the world could undertake or replicate.

Listen to the breakdown... it's just so obvious.

When I suggested that social media was the cause of these school shootings I wasn't saying it to muddy the water or any other debate trick. I say it because I believe it and I think anyone who takes an honest look at it will see that it should at least be looked into as a serious possibility.

Too bad he wasn't armed; he could have run away like the armed guard at the Parkland shooting.

There's just so many "serious possibilities" as to the causes, though. So far we have heard:

-social media
-abortion
-violent video games
-not enough Jesus
-doors
-pornography

that are all causes of school shootings.

Once "easy availability of guns" makes that list I might take such lists more seriously. Because no matter what 'triggers' someone, without a gun, there's no school shooting.

By definition, you can't go on a shooting spree if you don't have a gun. Does it cause the desire to shoot people? No. Does it make it possible to shoot people? Of course.

A gun is a tool. It is an inanimate object, it can't go on a shooting spree by itself. For that you need a crazed killer. Conversely, a crazed killer can't go on a shooting spree without a gun. You need both ingredients.

There are people who recognize the reality of easy access to guns allowing too many people to act on bad decisions before better judgement might otherwise allow them to reconsider and seek help.

Unfortunately, there are also people only too happy to live with their heads buried deep in the sand regarding the additional risk to society posed by guns.

There have been two posts on here in the last 12 hours referring to guns as the reasons for the shootings. Maybe more but I wouldn't have seen all the posts. That doesn't sound right to me either. So why the emphasis on only looking at the tool but not the reason for using it? It seems to me that we've decided that gun owners should make the sacrifice, but looking any further may mean the rest of us having something limited that we're not willing to cut down on. This is especially problematic since guns aren't going away.
It's like alcoholics saying that the only way to cut down on drunk driving is to eliminate the cars.

How hard is it to go to a dictionary or some online service and look up the difference between allow and cause?

Guns allow someone who has gone over the edge to go on a shooting spree.

This is NOT the same as saying that guns are the cause when someone has gone over the edge.

Didn't we cover this in third grade?
