Post 226-227 show your post 248 was speaking out of context.

That's not what he said and not what I said.
No one said the forum rules say you can't snitch. He said he was following the forum rules.(implying you have to snitch due to the rules)

>Yes, he had a firearm. How he got it, how long he had it, what kind of
>process was involved in getting it is all completely irrelevant.

I disagree. The way to stop him, shortly before he killed himself, would be to remove his access to the gun. Getting him mental health care _might_ have been possible at that point, but likely would not have been; the standards for committing someone against their will are very high.

The vast majority of people who kill themselves with a gun (or try to kill themselves with a noose, or a razor) would not present in a state that they would be held against their will by a mental health professional. Most of them are (relatively) stable people who had an incident push them over the edge, often compounded by drugs or alcohol. And the majority of them would not be willing to be institutionalized to deal with their problem.

There is a big mental health problem in this country, no doubt about it. But even making people aware of the problem and providing excellent free care on demand will not deter most gun suicides.

As we have talked about before the people who snap in an instant due to things like divorce/job loss/ deaths cannot be predicted ahead of time by Heath professionals. These people could be sane law abiding and meet even California strict gun laws, but flip in an instant due to extreme events.

You say the way to stop him is remove access to the gun before hand. How do you propose going about that?

By easy fix you mean a massive multi billion dollar system that links all criminal histories together into one database for all law enforcement levels, or denying someone's rights with a never ending refusal because joe liberal sheriff refuses to respond to that inquary for the background check because he doesn't want you to have guns, or some backwoods department only has someone there 3 hours a day to access the records and you never get I touch with them to see just what the flag was about.

By friends or family removing the weapon from the person, or locking it in a safe, or taking the ammunition. Keep in mind that most gun suicides are spontaneous; delaying them even long enough that they have to drive to the gun store for more ammo may be enough to prevent the suicide.

Goalposts....They have moved. Now family has time to do something. If they have time to do all that, they have time to call the cops for an OPC, or get in touch with a HCP.

There is no fix for the easy access to guns that exists in America. Anyone who wants one already has one, and even if for some reason you should not have one, it's easy to get around the rules.

You have your 2nd Amendment, the public largely supports gun rights, and this is just one of the costs you have to pay in order to enjoy those rights. No rules about background checks can fix that.
Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

The problem is that mental health is both expensive and difficult. Not a good combination when you're talking about either insurance or tax dollars. We're not that far beyond the equivalent of leeche's and bleeding (note that both can be valid treatments for a small number of conditions, but they're not the universally-accepted remedies of yore)

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Agreed, there's no one solution. Families and friends can intervene - but they don't always see it coming, and even if they do they sometimes can't get the gun that the guy hid in his closet. You can try to get depressed people help, but you can't confiscate the gun of everyone who is depressed - and treatment for depression won't prevent suicide, just lessen its frequency. You can try to tell if someone is suicidal, but most people can't tell, and even mental health professionals have a very high bar to involuntary admission - a stated desire to harm themselves or others. And many people contemplating suicide are still functional enough to know not to say that.

Suicide by gun is something we are going to have for as long as guns are a common fixture in households.

************Where is the rule that says you must snitch on people?

Right next to the rule that says one person shouldn't post with two seperate accounts Regulator.

You have proof he has two accounts?

You have proof there is no rule for snitching?

I just re read the forum rules, and there is no requirement to tattle anywhere in them.:)
Maybe there are unwritten rules. I suggest you and Anvilbrother/Regulator look for those. You can all come back and post when you have found them. :)

There is a fix. There just isn't an easy or palatable fix.

Indeed. No matter what kind of fix there is, somebody's gonna bitch about it.
There will be no addressing the customers as "Bitches", "Morons" or "Retards"!

Spaying and Neutering????

And declawing....I'm trying to come up with a joke about "hand"guns and not having hands, but I'm coming up empty handed.
