I'm not sure how or why it got used for branding slaves with, but that's something they'll have to come to terms with I guess. As Anvilbrother says, it's deeply ingrained in Louisiana culture. I don't personally think they are going to do anything more than acknowledge it's past use (dark history) and proclaim the symbol as their quasi-French culture link and go on about their lives and damn what anybody else thinks.
