The Generals sent the men home.... they knew they had to put our country back together. Those who had fought the war and survived it were tired and realized they needed to go home to their families and get on with life. My 2nd great grandfathers who fought showed up to the county courthouses ( the ones that were still standing) took their oaths of allegiance to the USA and signed the books like "Georgia, Returns of Qualified Voters and Reconstruction Oath Books, 1867-1869 " and became citizens of the USA. They have since sent their sons, grandsons and great grand children off to fight for their country as have other descendants of those who fought that most terrible of wars our people fought. It is best to remember we are one country and one people forged from the immigrants who have come to America from all over the world to become Americans.
