Bill Cosby

Recommended Posts

I'm scratching my head over this one. Mainly because a lot of the ladies I talk to about it are on Cosby's side. I'm having issues with understanding some of it. Part of me is innocent until proven guilty - the other part is where there's smoke, there's fire.

Here's what I don't understand...

Quote

Therese Serignese, 57, was one of the 12 "Jane Does" who agreed to testify in the 2005 case, which was ultimately settled out of court.

Serignese told the Huffington Post she met Cosby in 1976, at the age of 19. She said Cosby approached her in the jewelry shop of the Las Vegas Hilton.

"Somebody came up to me and put their arm around my neck from the back and said: 'Will you marry me?'" she said. "And I turned around to see who it was, and it was Bill Cosby."

He invited her to attend his show, and had her escorted to the green room where Cosby handed her two white pills and a glass of water.

"The next memory I have was I was in a bathroom and I was kind of bending forward and he was behind me having sex with me," she said. "I was just there, thinking 'I'm on drugs, I'm drugged.' I felt drugged and I was being raped and it was kind of surreal. My frame of mind was that it would be over soon and I could just get out of there."

Serignese said her mother encouraged her to stay in touch with Cosby, and he put her up in the penthouse at the Hilton for three weeks. She claims he threw her out after she had a pregnancy scare, but they remained in occasional contact over the next 20 years.

She said there was at least one other sexual encounter, in 1985, and two payments after she was in a car accident in 1996.

In 2005
, when she heard about Constand's lawsuit, she decided to call the Philadelphia police department and join the case.

First sexual encounter... I'm with her.
Second one - ten years later?
Helping you out after a car accident - kinda losing credibility
2005 - Oh, I'll just join in the suit?

Your thoughts on this?

Where there's smoke there's probably fire, but it's also generally complicated. Superficial gold-digging women can be raped. And sometimes people don't understand that they can destroy their credibility, even if they were telling the truth.

Based on what you posted, I vote not true. In 1976 Cosby was a big celebrity. I can't imagine him needing to resort to date rape drugs.

What date rape drugs did we know about then? I can only think of alcohol and Quaaludes. If she ingested two ludes she would have been out for hours. Becoming conscious and standing up after a short period not likely.

Ever heard of a Mickey Finn?
Unfortunately this is now being tried in a court of public Opinion rather than a (also fallible) city or county court.

That quote was just one of the many articles written in the past week. They all seem to be a re-write or journalists quoting journalists who said they said... you get the idea. I'm not a fan of the "Huff" type news aggregation of reports based on reports.

This is a man that I have admired and respected since his album in the sixties. Getting his Ed.D. His shows in the 70's & 80's and even his having talks with the younger African-American comedians about their use of language in humor. But, at the same time when you get past the one or two possibilities of gold-digging and start getting north of five-ten going on the record without concern of defamation - you have to start wondering.

You've had plenty of opinions and outright judgements over the years about politicians and their affairs, Tiger Woods, etc. If you've read what I wrote; I'm not throwing rocks at Cosby... It's a discussion, Kallend.

I just viewed a 30 min+ discussion on news TV and I agree with you. It is troubling for just the reasons you state.

Opinions about policy are quite different from pontification on the facts of a criminal case. Policy is open to discussion. Crime is adjudicated by the courts. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

What would you suggest Cosby could possibly do to prove, to the satisfaction of either the law or the "court of public opinion", that he is innocent (assuming he is innocent)? To me it seems that this is a "when did you stop beating your wife" situation. Even if he had signed, dated, and notarized consent documents from every woman he ever had a consensual interaction with (which of course no-one would ever have), surely he would not have such written documentation from every woman he ever encountered and didn't have sex with to verify that no hanky-panky had occurred. Nothing he could possibly say or do would be sufficient to satisfy people. Perhaps saying nothing, not even dignifying the accusations with a response, is the best course of action. Who (of the people who have already decided he is guilty) would be convinced by a denial? If he were to sue the women for defamation, challenging them to prove their claims, wouldn't he just be accused of being a bully?

It's too easy for people to make unprovable and also undefendable allegations thirty years after the fact, and the media is all too ready to reward that with attention. These days it seems being "famous" is reward enough, and the reason for the "fame" is irrelevant. That doesn't mean the women are lying, but if there is no way to tell who is being truthful I suppose anyone who says Cosby must be guilty is reflecting the prejudices they bring to the table (not necessarily racial, but perhaps biases such as "all men are predators" or "all women are truthful").

Sometimes "there's no way to tell" is the most honest answer.

Sorry, this is not for us to decide. We have not heard all the (admissible) evidence.

There is a correct process, and opinion polls do not enter into it.

This is public opinion, not court of la. There was plenty of inadmissible evidence that the public heard about OJ that the jury did not.

This is a public opinion matter. Like asking whether Dubya is a war criminal. Let's not focus on the technically correct matter that, yes, he has to be convicted...

Just because the guy is a celebrity that doesn't mean that he is capable of rape.

I've recently heard someone that I know has a charge against him for a rape on minor and that made me think, "How can he do that to a minor when himself has kids of his own?"

but once I thought of that main character, Will Hayden from reality TV show "Sons of Guns.", anything is possible including molesting your own kid.

Yup. part of my issue. Seems like whenever a public figure gets in their twilight years or has passed... things get really dirty.

Reading the morning news, I came across this article:

How the Bill Cosby Story Snowballed

So, I YouTube searched for the Hannibal Buress Standup Comedian and the first hit was of, "The Young Turks" doing a report on both the situation and the Buress Standup. I felt the report was very impartial and fair and summarized my thoughts on the matter well.

I don't think so.

Atleast Cosby fucked with an adult.

This one motherfucker that I used to know, and who many of you might know just got charged with this, fuck this guy.

Not by your previous statement it isn't.
I find it interesting/terrifying that our society is starting to lean towards public fear and outcry vs. the law.
OJ is innocent.
It's how it works.

You're never going to see Cosby prosecuted IMO.
He can never be guilty per se.
