3) The authorities in Kiev (not in Ukraine) came candid Nazis .

You can leave the russian propaganda to ignorant idiots;)

Nelyubin

They openly threatened the families of Russian troops in the Crimea.

They did? Really? Any proof to that? A recording maybe, a statement?

Nelyubin

They have already started their arrests of political opponents.

They did? Really? Any proof to that? And who are those opponents excactly?

Nelyubin

In this situation, Putin asked for advice on how to enter the federation additional troops to protect the families of Russian servicemen.

You can call military invasion what you want, it's still military invasion.

And for the last time, there are no Nazi running around Ukraine. There are some minor groups, but no mere than in any other counrty, and definately a lot less than in russia.

If Russia starts a coup or murdering Ukranian citizens, then fine - an international action should be taken

They have, and they did.
Coup in Crimea, and at least 40 killed by russian sniper in Kiev.Mercenaries of the Maidan shot, it is well known to you. For this reason the modern power in Kiev refused to make investigation of murders.
Only leakage of telephone conversation forced them to begin investigation.

Have you actually heard or read the transcript of that phone call? Or Are you just citing the russian representation of that conversation, provided by your "objective" media?

Yes, it is militia. Only shots are audible on the other hand. Obviously.

Putin officially accepts Crimea as part of Russia - a move the UN and EU have said is illegal.

But I' not sure we can, or even want to do anything about it... It's not like the UN is going to send in peacekeeper troops, and Putin will just laugh at typical soft sanctions.

The questions is what does he do next, if he thinks he can get away with this?

OK, now I have another solution: the US should invade and annex Nova Scotia. That would show Putin we're tough, and mean business.

NS? WTF?

Very few Canuckleheads would have a problem if you just went for the bigger prize and invaded and annexed Quebec.

We could never successfully invade Quebec. The street signs are all in a different language.

Well, watch the eastern border of Ukraine. That's going to tell us a lot.

Nobody whose country it isn't wants to get involved in combat. I have to agree with that stance too. War is expensive, and deadly, and not good for the overall well being of the planet or mankind.

Pushed hard enough though and that's not off the table. Putin knows this and I think that's his long term strategy; find the edge nobody is willing to die for, push a bit, wait a bit, see if you can find another edge to push.

No, Putin has not had to try very hard to make the US, and all its spineless followers and BS pundits, look like hypocritical idiots.

Any sanctions against Russia would negatively effect the USA and Europe more than it would Russia.

I agree.

There's argument to be made that he thinks he can get away with the Crimea move because nobody batted an eye when he annexed parts of Georgia into new Russian Protectorates a couple of years back.

I'm sure he's eying up former soviet countries for little bits he can snip off in the guise of 'legitimate border unrest / safety concerns'....

He's a nutter, but one that's good at playing the game.

That differs from 90% of all men on the planet, how?

Putin gave a little sermon about 7 months ago about how military action was only supportable for defensive needs, or signoff from the UN Sec council.

It will be hard for him to try that approach again, and his neutering of it goes well past what the two Bushes did wrt Iraq.

As for Europe needing Russia more than the other way around....it's very dangerous for a nation to rely on a single commodity for over half its income. We usually call them banana republics.

They may not be able to reduce their oil/gas dependency on a dime, but given a decade, it could get a bit uncomfortable for mother Russia, just as it has for Iraq and Iran.

This isn't going to be reversed by any nation or group of them.
No way.
Russia has their own Cuba now.

So...how soon before we get Patriot missile batteries in the Ukrainian portion of the base?
[:/]

Hello Cold War! Where ya been?
:(

I liked the part where they sank an old freighter in the entrance to the Ukrainian Naval Base...

So they have their warm water port.. or do they. I wonder how a few old derelicts would work in the Bosporus.
