But experts say that any potential solutions are likely to be difficult, technologically and politically.

This is the last sentence in that article. This should clue you into the fact that there is no simple solution and that none of us know enough about the situation to even propose a solution. That's why I think they should come out and be honest about the problem and ask for help. I am sure there are many smart engineers around the world that would accept their request.

Yea sounds like they took my advice.

"Authorities will also replace water storage tanks that are held together by bolts with welded tanks, which have a lower risk of leaking."

Nice, less leaky shit.

"Friedlander said that the ground freezing is "a good solution as an interim fix" until the leaks underneath the reactors are permanently sealed."

Nice, get to the source and seal the holes.

I knew my faith in Asians wasn't misplaced.

Bignugget - not a dig at you as in this context its clear what you mean, but does anyone else hate this word? To my mind, it covers such a huge variety of people and area that its use as a descriptor is virtually meaningless. This includes Chinese, Indian, Korean, Filipino, Japanese, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Cambodian and Thai. That's over half the worlds population.

Maybe its just me.

It was a joke. Relax. I was just playing on my original stereotype of "Asians being smart"

Gravitymaster

I said right from the beginning you should hop a plane and go over there and show them how to do it. I guess I was right, too.

Well sort of.

I took your advice, and actually made it useful.

I sent them an email with my ideas. Saved me tons of frequent flier miles.

heh - yeah like I said not a dig at you.
I was in the UK earlier this year and the racism there seems to be a little out of control. A number of times I heard things like "this trouble was because of the asians" and it just got me mad.

I don't think the overall cost of nuclear energy is the answer for a "cheap" alternative fuel. Placing the emergency generators to cool the reactors in the event of a power shutdown below sea level was not the brightest idea coming out of Japan.

With the majority of their food coming from the sea, I believe there is more trouble ahead, unfortunately.

Time will tell. It always does.
