Well, who would have expected THIS?

US internet terms of service:

You have the right to not use the internet, but realistically, good luck with that.

Anything you search or do may, excuse me, WILL be used against you in a court of law.

You have the right to consult an attorney before Googling or voicing an opinion on Facebook and to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future. We're not kidding. It's like the law or something. What's up with that?

If you cannot afford an attorney, well, enjoy your stay at the Moscow Airport.

If you decide to agree to use the internet now, without an attorney present, seriously, you're probably an idiot.

Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to be data monitored without an attorney present? Not that it matters, we kept a record of everything you've done since birth anyway.

I was just reading the Wikipedia page about Tor, and ran across this discouraging comment:
Quote

Furthermore, Egerstad is circumspect about the possible subversion of Tor by intelligence agencies –
"If you actually look in to where these Tor nodes are hosted and how big they are, some of these nodes cost thousands of dollars each month just to host because they're using lots of bandwidth, they're heavy-duty servers and so on. Who would pay for this and be anonymous?"

The one thing I have wondered about is BitCoin, its essentially solving for SHA256 keys and recomputing to validate new keys. The founder of Bitcoin is unknown and it was dropped as a fairly well polished set of code when it was introduced a few years back so someone had a large background in cryptography and programing to make that happen. That same algorithm is used a lot for PGP and other encryption programs. What is easier for the intelligence communities to do, keep buying more and more hardware to do this cracking or is it easier to do mass distributed computation to solve for the keys at a net cost of $0 for an intelligence agency. No need to buy computers, pay for power or maintain the systems.... let the users do it for you. With new items like Butterfly Lab's dedicated hardware machines its even easier for distributed computing to solve for these keys all with the user earning a "digital currency" that could turn to vapor at any time.

"Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? He is supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but to hear Kobayashi tell it, anybody could have worked for Nakamoto. You never knew. That was his power. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. And like that, poof. He's gone."

Where does that buck stop?

It's a simple matter of placing blame in the right place.

and it's Bush's fault again... how surprising coming from you.

Oh wait. This time you're actually right.

The Patriot Act pile of shit was signed by Bush after it was rushed through both houses of congress and passed by large majorities. So They are all at fault too. Let's not forget them.

Why does it matter anymore who signed it? Does anyone think Clinton or Obama wouldn't have signed it if 9/11 happened early in their first term? Both parties passed it nearly unanimously.

More important to today's politics: why hasn't Obama done anything to change it? Sorry, silly question. Better question: why has he done so much to expand it and to expand similar laws and programs?

Party is irrelevant. Neither party has ANY INTEREST AT ALL in your civil rights.

A very valid and important question, one that the press should be asking administration officials repeatedly. This is my single biggest disappointment with Obama's presidency.

And single biggest ongoing disappointment with major news networks (fox included).

I don't understand, do you think it's it okay now because BHO is expanding what GWB started?

Nope. Just assigning blame where it's due. I think both GWB and BHO are disappointments over this, but GWB is the guy that signed the Act.

so one started it. the other is allowing it to continue.

they're both wrong for doing it. they both get their own kind of blame.

Not quite. One signed it and started it. The other didn't just allow it to continue, he caused it to expand beyond initial size and scope and possibly beyond even it's legal boundaries. Both are bad, but don't give the second a pass on the extent of his culpability.

Why? Because the US has a very unhealthy relationship with anything military, and in my opinion by extension the whole defence/intelligence industry.

Every soldier is a hero, no event can take place without mentioning/honouring military staff and/or might.

The defence industry has a vice grip on the US and will go to great lengths to ensure continued and increased funding. I list all your various alphabet agencies under the moniker of defence industry.

My personal feelings towards the Patriot Act aside, every single politician who disagrees with it, but hasn't stepped up to lead the protests against it is just as accountable as either president. Every one of them, whether they are for it or against it would be guilty of having their name on the signature line if they were POTUS unless they were one of the few that sacrificed their approval rating to take the unpopular stand against it at the time when everyone was begging to be safer.

Using the act to demonize either president is a shallow argument with very little credibility. And yes, I just stepped in to defend BHO....not proud of it but I did :P
