nanook 1 #3 August 5, 2012 QuoteSome countries take the Olympics so seriously...is it ever possible that we could use it to decide our wars? No. The single-combat tend to be a duel between two individuals rather than whole nations. Using David vs. Goliath style confrontations between armies became obsolete when mission changed to taking down a country, annexing, economic superiority and destroying a legitimate or percieved threat. All, which require the confidence of the winning country that the losing nation is not able to go back on their "gentlemanly" word of staying "defeated". Single combat was more of a "chivalry" idea that became dated with the introduction of logbows and other weapons. This is why the phrase "what happens if someone throws a war and nobody shows up?" is a naive thought. Or those who believe that robots in place of living soldiers as the future of warfare to save lives as a viable alternative is thinking too innocently._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

Still with 10 silvers its only a matter of time before the 'lucky country' strikes gold again. From a Brit perspective yesterday was awesome. Been to the Olympics once last week and off to the mens athletics this week. Loving the whole thing. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. If single combat was used, politicians who are willing to fight on behalf of their nation will be the ones who will be elected. Wars will not cease. It probably will increase and become a fun past time. But that's just fantasy. In reality, its long range weapons that prevent single combat. It's foolish for a nation to depend on Gentlemanship regarding the affairs of State._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

Some actually believe this crap._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln
