Foreign Money in Campaigns

Recommended Posts

Are foreigners allowed to make contributions to our political campaigns? I thought that they were not but I have read where Mitt Romney has had a fundraiser in London and one in Israel. Would the Saudies or the Chinese be allowed to make contributions, even through PACs?

Campaign financing is maybe the most corrupting thing about our system of government. The founding fathers could not have imagined such a thing or they would have adressed it some where.
Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done.

Where are we going and why are we in this basket?

While I find it distasteful that any candidate solicits donations outside the U.S. I find it even more disturbing that you have heard Romneys doing it and not Obama.

Clinton got quite a bit of money from Indonesia and China.

Meh. We've had the best government money can buy from the very beginning.

That you find it more disturbing that one person doesn't recall or know about an instance of this kind of corruption, no matter who is the corruptee rather than the corruption itself says something about the general state of things or about how far partisanship has infected the general state of things.

My question is, "Is it Legal?"

What's disturbing is it isn't just one person.

Why do you think anyone cares if it's legal or not? Nobody is going to go after the first black President. They would immediately be labeled a racist if they did.

Can non-US citizens contribute?
Foreign nationals are prohibited from making any contributions or expenditures in connection with any election in the U.S. Please note, however, that "green card" holders (i.e., individuals lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S.) are not considered foreign nationals and, as a result, may contribute. For additional information, consult our "Foreign Nationals" brochure.

I'm sure there are lots of US citizens in both London and Israel.
