>'cutting spending' = 'any rational discussion ends' how should I read that?

?? Any way you like. You made that equivalence; I didn't. Rational discussion ends when the right starts in with the "socialist!" "tax and spend!" soundbites. (And when democrats start in with the "you hate kids!" stuff as well.) I suspect you'd even agree with that if you weren't trying so hard to disagree with me.

yeah - I can agree with that - (reluctantly :D)

edit - however - here is what you climb on board with, pretty much the 'you hate kids' mantra ---- "Instead of going to war we hire teachers, cops and maybe improve our roads? But i hear the GOP doesn't like that shit so we are fucked? "

Q. How many cops and teachers could have been hired if we hadn't invaded Iraq (unnecessarily)?

A. NONE, because Bush's war was unfunded anyway! and the war was a federal expenditure, remember lawrocket already pointed out teachers and Public Safety services is a state and city expense.

Nonsense - The "State Fiscal Stabilization Fund" (SFSF), a FEDERAL program, has in the past funded over 300,000 people in education.:P. Then there's Federal student aid (no students = no need for teachers).

There are LOTS of FEDERAL grants to states and cities for policing purposes (such as Byrne Grants).

Then there are the FBI, DEA, ATFE, Border Patrol... and other federal policing programs.

colluding is purposely moving your market to disadvantage your customer. that is a crime. it is NOT a crime to do any of the things in the paragraph i quoted. THOSE comments were not the crime. giving "levels" is not showing bids because they are not firm. he missed that. thus i found his article unreadable.

Are you stating that the broker telling the bidder that "... you're about a nickel short" to inform the bidder that they were 0.05 percent below the winning bid or "... you're about a dime high" to inform the bidder that they were 0.1 percent above the winning bid was not the same as showing bids? :S

no i am not really saying that because that is not what they are saying.

Considering the testimony, conviction, and fines it appears that is exactly what they were saying ...

they were convicted on the facts presented, not the article in Rolling Stone. his article is an inaccurate account of what happened. I get it because i actually undertand what they are saying. the author didnt. discussions while checking levels are different than discussions while getting a firm quote. if you dont understand then just let it go.

that Rolling Stone guy (presuming the same one, every one covers music like they should) has shown a couple years of cluelessness to date. He's writing to an audience that isn't equipped to question him.

Which shows the absolutely collossal amount of education funding. Same with federal police gramts, etc.

Yet we're alwasy hearing about wanting more teachers, police, etc.

"Let's give more teachers." How about fewer regulations that lowers all the reporting requirements which means more dollars go to the students? Ever get a hint of the federal education statutes? Hint - google Title 20 United States Code. And then check out 34 CFR. Then look at state requirements.

Schools are so administration heavy because of the requirements placed on them. And also note that in many places (like here in Cali) the long-term costs (underfunded) like pensions are a massive cost. I think that these are probably more pressing issues. But will be put off until critical mass is hit and disaster results. With any luck they won't all crash at the same time.

Its an article in Rolling Stone.:D:D It's written for potheads by potheads. I wouldn't argue about articles in that rag, you might legitimize retardedness.

Right, and IMNSHO more police and teachers is a far better way to spend taxpayer money than invading Iraq and killing tens of thousands of innocent people. But that's just me.
