BoogeyMan 0 #27 February 10, 2012 Quote>One can even respect their enemies battle field prowess (not he political and genocidal >stuff), maybe, this is a little of that. That's what I'm thinking, and that's the point I was trying to make above. Using an SS flag (or an SS-like flag) doesn't mean you believe in genocide - you may just be a soldier who thinks that the SS were effective. The SS was indeed very effective. Howeverrrrrrr....... Let's put those SS runes in a context that you might relate to better. The SS, in addition to offing 6M Jews, did their level best to kill every homosexual they got their hands on, too. SS runes are probably still illegal in Germany. Next trip abroad, visit a small town north of Munich. It's named Dachau. The Occupying Forces inspect it regularly, and have keep it in pristine condition since 1945. It was an "effective" place.(sarcasm)
billvon 2,685 #28 February 10, 2012 >The SS, in addition to offing 6M Jews, did their level best to kill every homosexual >they got their hands on, too. Yep, they were pretty despicable. But again, I'll bet you that the people in that picture do not think that killing homosexuals is a good idea. Heck, there's a pretty decent chance that they have friends that are gay, and would react pretty violently to the suggestion that those friends should be killed. Right over your head. Is this thread about the symbolism of the Runes? I've seen pix of troops posing with the U of Neb. flag. Big deal. SS runes are a whole different animal. Iceburner 0 #30 February 11, 2012 the media is going way overboard here. SS=Scout Snipers, yes they did have a flag that resembled the nazi symbol, but hell, here's another one that is used by many cultures...lets get our media to fry every culture that uses this because it was once used by the nazi party!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

Skyrad 0 #34 February 12, 2012 The first looks nothing like it and the second may have a passing resemblance but is clearly not the Nazi SS runes. Unlike the direct lifting of the Nazi symbol in the photo of the US Marines. You can try as hard as you like John but the simple truth is that they are posing with the Nazi emblem of a unit which murdered US troops in WWII which they have adopted as their own and chosen to identify with. Maybe you just need better education about exactly who the SS were and what they did. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. rhaig 0 #35 February 12, 2012 Quote Maybe you just need better education about exactly who the SS were and what they did. I think the real problem is the education of the young men in that unit. It's possible that their history teachers (or whoever approved their curriculum) decided that the teaching about the activities of the SS might upset some of their students and just glossed over that little bit of history. (one of the problems with schools today) I won't speak directly for John's education, but having met him and jumped with him on numerous occasions, I suspect he knows plenty about what happened in WWII including the activities of the SS.-- Rob

Andy9o8 0 #37 February 12, 2012 It's noteworthy that The History Channel here in the US is sometimes jokingly referred-to as "The Nazi Channel" due to all the Nazi-era history pieces they run (which is a hell of a lot!). More often than not, they are presented with thinly-veiled admiration. That has to have a certain desensitivizing effect - almost a sanitization of history, and one might argue, even a certain (tacit) glorification of the WWII-era German military. These young Marines, being the age they are, were raised with that being a part of the US pop culture they absorbed while growing up.

I'm in tears, really. *Jokingly....*, *thinly-veiled...* Those poor little fellows. Don't know with what they are playing, right? What a BS is that, Mr. Lawyer?? These young.... No, not marines, just young guys. Our young guys .. Fighting in the WWII days, just following what they were told - in those old days, it was no *pop culture* they followed, they just did what YOUR todays troops have to do. Obey. They did not know better. But, today, we know better. And still *your poor little marines* play around with that sh*t. Where have your young little folks been the last years??
