USMC or SS?

That's what I'm thinking, and that's the point I was trying to make above. Using an SS flag (or an SS-like flag) doesn't mean you believe in genocide - you may just be a soldier who thinks that the SS were effective.

The SS was indeed very effective. Howeverrrrrrr.......
Let's put those SS runes in a context that you might relate to better. The SS, in addition to offing 6M Jews, did their level best to kill every homosexual they got their hands on, too.
SS runes are probably still illegal in Germany. Next trip abroad, visit a small town north of Munich. It's named Dachau. The Occupying Forces inspect it regularly, and have keep it in pristine condition since 1945.
It was an "effective" place.(sarcasm)

Yep, they were pretty despicable.

But again, I'll bet you that the people in that picture do not think that killing homosexuals is a good idea. Heck, there's a pretty decent chance that they have friends that are gay, and would react pretty violently to the suggestion that those friends should be killed.

Whooooooooosh.....! Right over your head. Is this thread about the symbolism of the Runes? I've seen pix of troops posing with the U of Neb. flag. Big deal. SS runes are a whole different animal.

The first looks nothing like it and the second may have a passing resemblance but is clearly not the Nazi SS runes. Unlike the direct lifting of the Nazi symbol in the photo of the US Marines. You can try as hard as you like John but the simple truth is that they are posing with the Nazi emblem of a unit which murdered US troops in WWII which they have adopted as their own and chosen to identify with. Maybe you just need better education about exactly who the SS were and what they did.

I think the real problem is the education of the young men in that unit. It's possible that their history teachers (or whoever approved their curriculum) decided that the teaching about the activities of the SS might upset some of their students and just glossed over that little bit of history. (one of the problems with schools today)

I won't speak directly for John's education, but having met him and jumped with him on numerous occasions, I suspect he knows plenty about what happened in WWII including the activities of the SS.

It's noteworthy that The History Channel here in the US is sometimes jokingly referred-to as "The Nazi Channel" due to all the Nazi-era history pieces they run (which is a hell of a lot!). More often than not, they are presented with thinly-veiled admiration. That has to have a certain desensitivizing effect - almost a sanitization of history, and one might argue, even a certain (tacit) glorification of the WWII-era German military. These young Marines, being the age they are, were raised with that being a part of the US pop culture they absorbed while growing up.

I'm in tears, really. *Jokingly....*, *thinly-veiled...*

Those poor little fellows. Don't know with what they are playing, right?

What a BS is that, Mr. Lawyer??

These young.... No, not marines, just young guys.

Our young guys ..

Fighting in the WWII days, just following what they were told - in those old days, it was no *pop culture* they followed, they just did what YOUR todays troops have to do. Obey.

They did not know better. But, today, we know better. And still *your poor little marines* play around with that sh*t. Where have your young little folks been the last years??

What a hypoctical world it is, overseas B|

They look like lightening bolts to me. But then, I'm not running around looking for excuses to criticize the U.S. military, by looking for nazis under every rock.

If you read the link in the original post - and then page down in this link

http://www.militarytour.com/reproductions/ww11/german/Flags/RGflagsrepo.htm

you'll see the issue - and another thing

however, I think anyone trying to take a couple letter "s" and also think lightning bolts are cool, would likely come up with an identical or similar design accidentally

looks like an unfortunate mistake that people will freak out over

I also suspect that most groups, upon being shown the comparison, would quickly change their logo

what I don't like is the likelihood that no one mentioned it to those that owned that flag. the press likely went straight to mass publication and accusations. what could have been resolved in a few minutes as a misunderstanding, is now a huge international news story with the haters being all self congratulatory over their orgy of accusations against anything military

not everyone in the world is a fanatical history buff

I on the 82nd Freefall team - jumped a demo into the only first and one WWII memorial - laid in brick forms across a walk way - I think that was in Atlanta Georgia - SGT. Matt Davidson was pulling Ground - I think I landed first - A lot of names - a lot of bricks - in the structuring - stronge - firm looks -of -please remember me - this happened - from veterns - I was the only specialist other then Matt to jump into the Fayetville Special Forces and Airborne Museum - Because branch was giving him a hard time - Neal Beverly jumped as well - An old man walked up to me and said to me - "You look like a good Christian Man - you know those Nazi Bastards were'nt good for nothin - NO not one." - He smiled and went on his way.

It didn't "resemble" the Nazi SS symbol, it was identical. Why are you trying to excuse the inexcusable?

Do you object to them using the letters "SS" in ANY form to represent scout-sniper teams? Or is it ONLY when they look like the letter "S" from the rune alphabet as used by the nazis that you object?

My point being, the double lightning bolt symbol is not unique to the Nazi's or the USMC.

I think the concept is lightning can strike twice in the same spot to make certain the enemy is quite dead. This is conjecture on my part but, I kinda like it.

You know, dirigibles were an invention of nazi Germany, and now Goodyear is flying them over America. The even orbit over large assemblies of people, like at the Superbowl. Hmmm... I wonder if Goodyear is a supporter of neo-nazis bent on the destruction of America? If we're going to stamp out all symbols of evil nazis, then shouldn't we dismantle and destroy the Goodyear blimps?
