German federal president Wulff - do Americans bother?

...how 19th Century.

Not even his bullying the press is worth a raised eyebrow? I always had the idea that Americans uphold the idea of freedom of press/speech?

Apart from that: I thought the Wulff affair doesn't really stir up emotions in the US. We still got to learn from your politicians, especially the Tea-Baggers, hum? :P

I'm sure it's worth a raised eyebrow if you're German, or possibly even EU. Do the Germans care about Sheriff Joe Arpaio? Have they even heard about him?

Sorry, but it's just too far removed. And it's not sexy. And it's not about oil. And it's not about Muslims.

Sheriff Arpaio got a lot of coverage by so-called "Boulevard Magazines" on TV (Tabloid TV). They paid a lot of attention to the pink undies, well tabloid.

The answers re Wulff so far are sort of comforting - at least he doesn't spoil the image of Germany any further in the US :P

Hard to do that, IMO. Try, and you pay a price.

And so he does, and now even complains that the were "chasing him" (*) - good that, huh? B|

(*) Even referred to it as "Stahlgewitter" (Storm of Steel) - a euphemism for war that is based on book of Ernst Jünger.

Does the president of Germany have any power? You never hear about this guy; I kind of thought he basically is a ceremonial ribbon cutter.

You're right so far. The Federal President thus ought to be a role model and moral authority. Not the average politician.

The person who's really in power is the Federal Chancellor. That is why you know Angela Merkel, I suppose. If not: It's the lady Dubbya gave a shoulder massage at the G8 summit in Germany. ;)

That's sad that you feel left out. I also don't know much about the governor of south dakota.

I agree that politicians should be above the ranks in honesty and integrity but...

Pink undies? NOW you have my attention.

...unless, of course they were HIS pink undies.
:D:D:P

My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

When he was premier of the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) he got a home loan at a pretty low interest rate from the wife of an acquaintance of his who happened to be an entrepreneur. He then traded this loan for a loan from a state bank in Baden-Würtemberg, also at "special" interest rates. Nothing really that much scandalous but at the edge of legality or even infringing it. Being investigated by a committee of the state legislative assembly.

AFAIK nothing that Americans don't expect of a politician. ;) It's just that he is Federal President now and such an office requires that one maintains high standards. Thus the public interest...

And just like in the other thread, DR. GHER, you are talking out of you ass again.

This comes from a fellow American citizen from a more credential citizen than the U of AZ will ever afford you. Plus, I also have a German passport.

DO YOU? Dimwit!

Your average American lost interest in Germany on May 8 1945.

My interest disappeared once I acquired a Karabiner 98 Kurz in good condition. A Luger P-08 is too expensive, and a Walther P-38 is boring.
