Is Newt Toast?

Newt is of no concern.

He couldn't win the National and he won't be given the opportunity either.

First he failed to get himself on the Virginia ballot (gross incompetence).

A dumbass mistake, which will cost him plenty, since I'd have thought he'd do very well in VA. But, as much as it might hurt him in the numbers-and-momentum game, if he does well enough in plenty of other primaries, he could recover from this blunder.

Now it turns out he lied about his first divorce:

I frankly doubt that any significant bloc of swing/undecided voters, in either the primaries or the general election, really cares. Newt's divorce story has been relegated to "old news", even if someone finds new news about it. If someone is borderline Newt/No-Newt, they'll make that decision based on other factors.

Toasted Newt

The divorce is old news. Lying about it isn't old news.

The fact that he's a lying hypocritical scumbag, willing to bend to any convenient political wind for his own power, is indeed old news. Still relevant, but anyone who's been paying attention has known all that for 13 years or more.

It's interesting, though, that the party of "family values"is willing to overlook all of that, though. Speaking of hypocrites...

Agreed. It's not like there are people out there saying "well, I'm fine with his three wives and his divorcing his first wife once she was hospitalized with cancer - but now that he lied about court documents? That's outrageous! I'm voting for Obama."

Noone gives a fuck about Newt's divorces/wives. People who say they do weren't going to vote for him anyway.

Edited to add: in this respect it's just like Bill Clinton's BJ. People who acted all shocked&appalled were already against Clinton anyway.

Newt will be toast when he decides he's made enough money off his campaign to last for a while.

Poor Republicans. Right now they're down to a Libertarian running as a Republican and a Democrat running as a Republican.

How does one make money with funds that are restricted from personal use on pain of death. If Gingrich is staying in the campaign for fundraising purposes only, which he may very well be, it's just to pay off the massive debts he's built up trying to run a presidential campaign (which he has done about as well as he did running the House as speaker, and probably about as well as he would do running the country as president.)

Not all money made while campaigning has to go into the campaign war chest. I believe he can still book separate speaking engagements for substantial fees and keep the money from his book sales.

He can also, I believe, use certain funds while on the campaign trail for "campaign expenses" like food, hotels, wardrobe . . .

The more famous politicians make a lot of "extra" money similarly to how sports and entertainment stars do by turning themselves into a valuable personal brand, and then leveraging that brand as a marketable commodity. In Gingrich's case, take a look:

http://www.rollcall.com/news/newt_gingrich_rose_through_congress_to_wealth-210733-1.html

So while politicians' campaigns may accumulate a great deal of debt, the politicians themselves, individually, increase the marketable value of their personal brand via the publicity their campaigns get them.

WSJ reports this morning that it found archived copies of "Newt Notes" from 1996 praising the Romney health care plan in MA. (The originals had been deleted - whooda thunkit?)

online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204296804577123043147395330.html

"The health bill that Governor Romney signed into law this month has tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system

"We agree entirely with Governor Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100 percent insurance coverage for all Americans."

Accurate. I'm not in Newt's camp. When it gets to the nut cutting, how the Repub candidate fares, one on one, with Obama will be the determining factor for voters. Who sounds best, looks best and can out wit the other.
BHO is the sitting Prez. As such he has his leadership, and other baggage to defend. Without his teleprompters BHO stumbles badly.

Did you hear Nixon was gay? That should keep you going for a few days until you find the next issue to whine about Republicans.

Tell it to the WSJ and Fox. They are reporting it.:P
