What political purpose is there in making the ATC system in the US look so bad?

Are you talking about Reagan? It was all about busting unions and encouraging businesses to do likewise.

If you're talking about the current issue with controllers falling asleep in towers, there is not a direct political reason for that to happen, but it is traceable back to Reagan's busting of the union and decades of pushing controllers to work longer hours and with fewer controllers. Putting a SINGLE controller on an over night shift in the ridiculously named "Reagan National" tower and then having people bitch about that controller falling asleep is what we'd call irony.

"look so bad" or is it so bad?

OK so controllers napped at airports where there is hardly ever a night landing.
As a matter of fact the planes landed just fine without a controller. They didn't need one.

So you are right,
What is the political motivation to smear the air traffic controllers just now.

Could it be that a group of them have recently decided to tell what they know/ witnessed on 9-11?

Interesting!!!

Peace,
Jim B

The sleep issue followed closely by the screw-up with the first lady's approach. We all know it wasn't that serious an infraction yet it was blown all out of proportion on yesterday's news programs. It's a conspiracy I tell ya.

Read the post by quade, so the BHO bunch can blame Reagan for breaking PATCO and by extension showing that Republicans will destroy the workforce by reducing the power of collective bargaining and therefore keep us in severe economic depression, increase inflation thus requiring more government intervention and regulation to keep us safe, healthy and protected from the womb to the tomb.

It is simple, it is Bush's and his cronies fault.

Oh, and BTW, BHO recently blamed the Republicans for the bridge collapse in MN in 2007. MN is a Democratic state, under Democratic local government and the funds were allocated by Democratic Congressmen.

I submit that there isn't one.

This is just the news media doing what they like to do with "sensational" stories. And then there is public reaction to those stories which demand that "something be done". Followed by bureaucrats taking some action which appears to punish someone or change something about the system. Then the public goes back to their ignorance and apathy once again, and everything resumes normal operations.

Same old story.

What he said. We should quit ascribing to plots things that can be explained away by simple carelessness or stupidity.

Those are in far greater supply than the ability to plot and keep it a secret.

I'm probably stating the obvious here, but from what the news said, it seems that the current system of "revolving shifts" may be a large part of the problem. If you only stick someone on an overnight shift once in a while, rather than sticking them with it all the time and letting them adjust to a new sleep schedule, they're going to be sleepy. If they're used to sleeping at night, they're going to want to sleep at night. Sure, nobody wants to get stuck with the night shift. So... pay them more, pay daytime less, make night desirable for the ones who need money, and let their bodies adjust to a night shift. If you only pull a night shift once every so often and work days the rest of the time, your sleep cycle is going to be screwy!

Except that wasn't the FAA. Those were military controllers.

<>I believe Reagan fired the Federal PATCO employees after most of them refused to return to their post.

Reagan and his fellow cronies used the strike to set the tone nation-wide as one of union busting.

This isn't just my opinion. Look at the dates of when union busting in this country started to take off and it can all be traced right back to the ATC firings.
