I'd sooner let a weldor do the heart transplant. That way only one person dies.

You keep trying to make the argument that if a welder FUCKS UP he could kill hundreds of people with his shotty work. Which in turn somehow makes his skill set as, or more important than the surgeons.

but

By that logic, a commuter train conductor could also kill hundreds of people if he/she fucks up. No offense to train conductors, but you can teach a monkey to conduct a train.

And you underestimate the skills needed to be a top notch weldor.
BTW, the word is "shoddy", not shotty. Shoddy, with two d's.

Really ?!? Sounds like a fairly broad classification to me. So you would trust a Urologist to perform open heart surgery on yourself or another family member. Good luck with that. :S

No, but I'd trust him with my kidney. :o]

Can a surgeon prevent the catastrophic deaths of hundreds of people at the same time?
Maybe, but probably not.

That's my point:

Also, I feel there's a huge difference between having the potential to end a life and having the potential to save a life.

You're talking about avoiding conditions that could potentially lead to injury or death.

I'm talking about saving the life of a dying person.

This is a really stupid argument. "My favorite profession is better than yours." "No, mine is more important to society." "No, my profession's screwups are bigger."

People get paid based on what their work is worth to people, how easy that skill is to master and how many people have it. Surgeons make more than welders for those reasons.

So how come I make $40,000 a year

H-D mechanic making 40k a year? Wow, you do live in a fantasy world! Most techs barely clear 20k.

H-D? Harley Davidson Mechanic? Or Tech, (big difference) Tech's replace parts.(monkey work) Harley Mechanics Build Motorcycles , are Machinsit , welders , and usually trained in many other aspects, 40 grand is not unusal at all!

I can't believe the bulk of this thread has become a competition over the better value of welding versus surgery.

It's strangely compelling shit.

Note that the Romans managed to build extensive infrastructure without welding. But they did have surgeons.

And the question shouldn't be which has greater value to society. It's which is more replaceable if all its participants got up and quit.

Your typical wrench spinner at a dealership makes around 20k. Your typical builder does a lot better. It also depends on the area you live in. I would think that a builder in CA does better than a builder in the MO. Perceived value also comes into play. Unless, of course, you stuck a Revtech engine in the frame and then it's just perceived as junk;) no matter where you are at.

Strange you picked Mo. and Cal. I have owned shops in both, My income trippled in Cal! (I'm now retired from building fro other people)

If we switch to boobies, I have a great surgeon building me some new ones. Glad I didn't choose the welder...lol. :)

So why all the people here giving me grief for charging a fee that was obviously worthwhile or I would not have been stopped from un-doing my work?
A surgeon charges several thousand dollars for a couple hours work and everybody says it's ok. I charge the same hourly rate for a few minutes work and those same people have a fit.
I guess I have to do like the medical profession and convince people...and myself...that i am a god. :D

I happen feel the value is the impact it would have on society if all its particpants got up and quit and were not replaced. Who would be missed more?

And, BTW, the Romans did have welding. They also had brazing, soldering, and the ability to create alloys. These processes were vital to the infrastructure and Empire they created. The Egyptians also had the ability to join metals.

Because it was sort of a dickish thing to do. Imagine if your doctor had done the same thing; you'd probably be talking to a lawyer, not posting on DZ.com.

Right. Because they're not comparable.

So it is ok for a doctor to take advantage of my situation and charge me as much as he thinks he can get, but I am a dick for doing the same to him?
Sorry, Bill, but I don't agree at all.

after you have done 4 years premed, 8 years medical, 2 years internship, another raditional 4 yeas minimum specialised surgical training, come on back with your whine about how long it took to learn to weld, (BTW , I am a welder):P:S

the doctor charged you the same as he'd charge the next guy for the same service (welder, dentist, engineer, trash guy, etc etc etc). You charged more to this guy than you would a fellow welder (or a cashier, or a bus driver) because you have a "belief" that this guy has more income than you.

Sorry, I don't buy into the "it took x number of years to get my title" argument. Many trades are only mastered after 10 or 20 or more years of experience and learning.
