For my own edification....he was found guilty of violating house rules, but wouldn't breaking these same rules also be "crimes"?

Either way he should not have been applauded.

Public = breaking laws, penalty, no applause
Congress = breaking rules, slap on the wrist, applauded

:S

No. Let's say your work place has a rule against co-workers dating. You break it. Have you committed a crime?

I believe his point is that in his mind an ethics rule violation is equivalent to a double homicide.

I'm fairly certain that's not true.

you've been trying to assert no criminal activity is involved, that it was merely internal rules.

Not reporting gifts might fall into that category, but the purpose of that reporting is to prevent corruption, exactly the sort alleged. And tax evasion certainly is a crime. When it's committed by the chair of Ways and Means it comes close to treason.

How can government expect the people to pay their taxes when the guy writing the tax code won't? (nevermind the guy running Treasury)

well, there's no question here - he amended his returns to add the unreported income. And he did this after being called out on it. You can translate that to a confession. Curiously, didn't appear to pay any penalties or interest, just the unpaid taxes.

Is it really that simple in your world. Rangel is an asshole and the worst kind of politician. And the fun continues...

The Federal Election Commission is investigating a complaint that Rep. Charles Rangel improperly used his National Leadership PAC to fund his legal defense on ethics charges for which he was censured Thursday, The Post has learned.

Take a good hard look at the list of charges and tell me it's all good. The only defense he could mount that would work for me is the "I'm not the only crooked politician in DC" defense.
