NickDG 23 #1 November 11, 2010 This will wind up in SC but . . . I was at the VA hospital the other day getting my bi-annual medical exam. It's something I've done every two years since leaving the service in 1975. We've had three forms of the G.I. Bill in this country. The one World War II vets served under, the one Korean and Vietnam Vets served under, and the current version for Iraq and Afghanistan Vets. When I joined the Marines in 1971 the Vietnam war was very unpopular in this country. So like the military always does when they're hard up for enlistees they sweetened the deal. Back in those days job related health care was scarce to non-existent so the military promised me health care for life in exchange for four years of honorable service. Yesterday, at the VA, I was told the deal is off. This wasn't completely out of the blue as Bush (the younger) began reneging on the deal during his second term. It came in the form of a means test which was a form I had to fill out to see if I financially "qualified" for the no strings attached health care I was promised. I've filled out that form a number of times now and I always did it the same way. I take a big black felt pen and write "FUCK YOU!" across the form and sign my name to it. They always accepted the form that way, sometimes with a laugh that made believe other vets were doing something similar. But yesterday I was called into a room where some guy told me, "Sorry, Nick, but this won't fly anymore." So I asked him, "How can that be? The government and I made a contract and I lived up to my end of it?" And I don't think he realized how mad I was when he chuckled and said, "We're the government, we can do anything we want." It took all the will power I had not to leap over the desk and rip his throat out. The more I think about it the madder I'm getting. It's not about the money so much, if the country is in dire straits I don't mind chipping in. But when I see plainly we are in this mess because of bumbling politicians, a Wall Street gone wild, and the outright greed of my fellow Americans (most of which never served a day in uniform) it just chaps my ass. Well, anyway, happy Veteran's Day! NickD
 normiss 622 #2 November 11, 2010 Much like Veteran's Day itself. It's more about selling cars, selling furniture, giving the government and financial employees the day off. What the actual VETERANS get???? not a fucking thing. that damn DD-214 is worthless now days.
 Amazon 7 #3 November 11, 2010 Thanks for what you did and do Nick. I used the education bennies.. but have never touched a dime from them for medical or for that whole house loan guarantee thing. They pissed me off so much with just getting my educationbenefits, I swore I would have to damn near be dead to ever have the VA do SQUAT for me. They did make a whole lot of promises... I lived up to my end of it.. and hell I even gave em twice as much time because I was having a pretty good time there in 75 with getting to toss my body out of planes for an extra $55 a month and swimming around out in Biscayne Bay and playing in the USAF Navy boats. We will see how it goes for the rest of my life... Because a promise is a damned promise. "Hey, you promise us you'll spend four years dodging bullets and if you somehow survive it you'll get health care for life" is a promise. Nick did his part. The doctor's response of "We're the government and we'll do what we want" is EXACTLY the reasn why I am against government health care, etc. BECAUSE promises mean nothing to a government more interested in itself than in its citizens. More interested in a vote than in its word. More interested in special interests than in vested interests. This has been going on for ages. And it will continue. The government will make a long term promise in order to obtain a short-term benefit and then piss on the person at a later date in favor of devoting those resources to some other project that looks good and nice. Nick - unfortunately you are no longer considered to be worthy by a government who considers others to be more worthy. You are NOT the face that the government can advertise as being worthy of saving. And sorry, Nick - yours is a demographic that has not been overly supportive of this Congress or Administration. It's a crock of shit that lands tens of thousands of people like you in a similar situation. I NEVER, EVER trust the government. I do not trust that I will have Social Security or Medicare. I have seen training and documentary films on this stuff I can not imagine coming even close to being that cold I sure as hell dont want to find out first hand Oh And thanks for your service Same to all who have served"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." AdamLanes 1 #18 November 11, 2010 No offense, Nick, but what makes you think you are so special? The United States Government has been going back on promises, and reneging on contracts for hundreds of years!
KidWicked 0 #19 November 11, 2010 I'm having a hard time with this one because I like NickDG. But why should signing up for the military provide you with a guaranteed life long benefit?Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..." Andy9o8 0 #20 November 12, 2010 Quote I'm having a hard time with this one because I like NickDG. But why should signing up for the military provide you with a guaranteed life long benefit? Because that was the bargain up-front. From the OP: QuoteWhen I joined the Marines in 1971 the Vietnam war was very unpopular in this country. So like the military always does when they're hard up for enlistees they sweetened the deal. Back in those days job related health care was scarce to non-existent so the military promised me health care for life in exchange for four years of honorable service. By changing the bargain unilaterally, the US is welching on the deal. By comparison, if the US govt was a private party and tried to unilaterally do that, it would get sued for breach of contract. Frankly, the only reason why veterans can't sue the US govt now for pulling this shit is because "sovereign immunity" shields the US govt from being sued for that kind of thing. Thankyou Andy...seriously Sometimes I wonder why our armed forces don't mutiny... ...but happy vets day anyway.....makes me sick! has anybody ever seen a vet sleep with there eyes open...literally. Our vets deserve a liftime. I have 2 life goals...infiltarate and destroy the vatican and expose the US government for the fraud that it has become....and yes, they are both in kahoots. I truly am sorry vets...hopefully I can live up to the challenge of being YOUR warrior! sorry, I just thought I'd save this till our day of respect was over. But with me....it is a never ending battle....the chances are I'll die soon...I just want people to believe in God and that I'll do whatever I can to get the vets the Life and care they deserve! Kill me...not the Vets! I'm sorry guys... my apologies.Your secrets are the true reflection of who you really are...
popsjumper 2 #22 November 12, 2010 I'm with ya, Nick. I was young and ignorant when I signed up. It never crossed my mind that the government would renege on me. ...and the way we were treated upon return from VN was just beyond comprehension. U.S. soldiers these days have no clue what that was like. I just hope that today's soldiers don't get screwed like VN vets did....well, there's always hope.My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Falcon5232, SCS8170, SCSA353, POPS9398, DS239

lawrocket 3 #24 November 12, 2010 Quote But why should signing up for the military provide you with a guaranteed life long benefit? My wife is hotter than your wife.
