Latest Crime Stats Show Violence Down in Chicago

The October crime statistics released by the Chicago Police Department on Sunday showed yet another decrease in violent crimes.

Overall, violent crime was down 9.8 percent, and homicides were down 2.3 percent, with a total of 379 murders so far in 2010. Police said that puts us on par to have a lower number of murders than any year since 1965...

The Supreme Court overturned the Chicago handgun ban in June, 2010, allowing law-abiding citizens of Chicago to once again own handguns for self defense. Five months later, the city has their lowest murder rate since 1965. Coincidence?

You're making a big deal out of 2.3%. And with the way the city stalled on satisfying the SC decision, there's only been a couple months where the citizens could make use of their restored rights.

The article you cited also mentioned that a slim majority of the murders are gang related. The gun ban never affected them.

"This is the 22nd consecutive month of decreases in the overall, violent and property crime indices, according to police."

So then, the crime was never about guns in the first place, and the handgun ban was misguided and ineffective. The police should have just been targeting the gangs all along, instead of denying rights to the law-abiding.

Actually, I would say that it has been too short of a time span to see any real effect of the ban reversal.

Worth mentioning again.

Most of the gun crime is criminal on criminal violence.
Next comes criminal on innocent.
Then normally innocent on innocent.

So, a gun ban will not stop criminals and will only have a very small impact on normally innocent on innocent since guns already exist (and that is a much smaller part of gun crime).

I have guns for two reasons:
1. I like shooting. I compare it to accuracy with a canopy.

2. Criminal on innocent crime.
