I'm becoming an atheist

I have a question for you religious folk. Let's suppose that the universe is truly governed by an omnipotent, altruistic deity.

Why do you believe that your god is the god? What's to say that the millions of people that follow [insert religion here] are following a false religion and yours is the true one? Surely the universe can't be governed by Jesus, Muhammad, Krisna, Zues, etc... (Unless, of course, there's a secret cosmic league of super-friends!) And what's to say that heaven & hell away departed souls? Why not reincarnation? Or attainment of Jina?

I guess my question is why are you right about your god and everyone else is wrong about theirs? Especially since there are religions dating way further back than Christianity.

Bill Cole, where are you? This is a serious question which really requires a specialist! :)

Well thats my experience. I have to say Ive never heard of any mono theist claim god is anything but perfect. I thought this was a standard assumption of the Abrahamic faiths. anyone disagree?

And that is also my experience. God sets the standard. He is top of the food chain. I find it laughable that someone would claim to have such a unique handle on the reality of perfection that they could judge God. If such an individual exists would they please come out of the closet and shine their light of wisdom so the rest of us may learn from and emulate them.

In actual fact ignorance and arrogance confers limitless ability to overestimate ones status and abilities.

I am not a "religious folk" but I am a Christian. Ultimately for me it boils down to who I am and what I need spiritually/psychologically to be healed and set free. What I experienced some 30 years ago was transforming and still empowers me with everything I could ever want or imagine. If you can find what I am talking about somewhere anywhere else, I would love to hear about it. For me there is only one way. You are responsible for yourself, may you will find what I have found. And hopefully you will do much better with what ever you discover.

>Funny how this supposedly perfect being designed things like nipples on men . . .

==============
Satan: When I have the map, I will be free, and the world will be different, because I have understanding.

Minion: Understanding of what, Master?

Satan: Digital watches. And soon I shall have understanding of video cassette recorders and car telephones. And when I have understanding of them, I shall have understanding of computers. And when I have understanding of computers, I shall be the Supreme Being!

God isn't interested in technology. He knows nothing of the potential of the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how He spends His time - forty-three species of parrot! Nipples for men!

Minion: Slugs!

Satan: Slugs! He created slugs! They can't hear. They can't speak. They can't operate machinery. I mean, are we not in the hands of a lunatic? If I created a world, I wouldn't mess about with butterflies and daffodils. I would have started with lasers, eight o'clock, day one!

Right, the only reason I responded to your question is that it seems most atheists equate faith and hope in God with a religion. Sorry if I was not in your "target" group. It was pretty obvious what you were fishing for.

330 Million Hindu gods. Just based on the law of averages, the Judeo-Christian god is unlikely to be the real one.

>Bilvon , are you suggesting that mainstream Chrsitianity does not
>think The bible is perfect, or does not think God is perfect? or both?

Mainstream Christianity does not think the Bible is perfect, in my experience. Even the previous Pope (who I assume you will take as representing a big chunk of Christianity) accepted evolution as an accurate scientific theory, thus making the Genesis story literally inaccurate.

So becaus eyou think that the Pope is human and subject to human error, and he says genessis is incorrect, so he must be wrong.

Is that what I read?

OK - That explains it better. That is why I asked.

Perhaps you could have Jakee explain things and edit your posts for you though.:D

Mmm... I think that people's notions of atheism isn't completely accurate. Just because an atheist does not believe in a deity does not mean that he/she has no metaphysical beliefs...

For example, your view on the metaphysical workings of the universe are through a theological standpoint. You believe that an omnipotent being is responsible for creation, all that is, and afterlife. I on the other hand hold a more scientific view, seeing the universe as a vast mosaic of energy. In response to maadmax, I guess my spiritual/psychological needs are met through the exploration of quantum mechanics, consciousness, and the relation of the two. And my moral compass is guided by a sort-of karma/energy system belief that I hold.

Anywho, if anyone has the chance, I recommend watching a movie called What The Bleed Do We Know? Down The Rabbit Hole. It's a bit cheesy and uses a bit of bs pseudoscience, but the overall jist is pretty intriguing. It focuses on quantum mechanics.

And a movie regarding consciousness that I would HIGHLY recommend is Waking Life. The plot line intertwines consciousness and lucid dreaming, but does an excellent job touching on both.

I just want to say that God is working some serious miracles in my life right now.(for other people)..maybe I'll explain later, but I'm in complete extasy right now. I've only been a christian for a little while, and I'm just starting to see some fruit. It's so hard to go day after day and see nothing as if it's all in vain. Ironically enough it all had something to do with my wild weekend. ( as posted here in this forum)

My love for all of you has grown tremendously.

Though I've used some extremely unorthodox methods lately...God prevails! (not to say that God approves of my methods...and there will be consequences to pay...)

I just thank you all....

Thanks for being such a good sport Quade....

On a side note, I know I tend to to be hard in these forums but I'm even harder on myself...perhaps thats not a good method for any of us.

There are still gonna be some things that I can't compromise and I'll tend to give it like I get it, but, I've just been given a dose of God's grace that will change me forever.

I just want us to understand eachother respectfully...

btw, Ralf...wat's going on dude...talk to us.

Regards,

Corey

I realize you're just trying to have fun with this, but at least contribute something productive to the conversation. These little snide remarks don't do anything. No one in here suggested that ALL religious people are evil. Religion is just the root of a large percentage of the world's violence.

...and why not...God is obviously so inherent in us that all the swindlers can take advantage of it....so easily, I might add.

edited to change Gos, to God.

Give me a call while I'm still at it, not sure how much longer I can take this athiest shit...it really sux, but it's a blast... were you guys like nerds of somthing in highschool? didn't get a chance to live it up when you were supposed to? I suppose I can understand that... I fell like like I'm 18 again....Athiest must have a peter pan complex or somthing.

There's no such thing as an atheist lifestyle. It's not atheism that makes you want to go to bonfire's with drum circles and women, it's you.

The word projection is thrown around far too often in these forums, but in this case it really fits - the 'complexes' and 'highschool issues' you're complaining about are all your own.
