I have done a quick search and it is really difficult to wade through the crap out there, to find actual percentages, but there are stories littered through the first few pages - so I can't provide a link. The source of my information was a police officer from when I grew up in southern africa, and he warned me that it was not uncommon for people to wake-up in the night during a burglary only to find that the intruder already had found the persons weapon and had possession of it.

In other words your source is nothing more than hearsay, which is something of such low quality that courts don't allow it into testimony. And he may have just been telling you that story to try and enforce his own beliefs about preventing people from owning guns. You're going to have to do better than that...

Why? Does it annoy you that some citizens are able to save their own lives by using guns for self defense? Is that somehow a bad thing? Would you prefer that these successful self defense stories instead be murder stories?

And I had a cop friend tell me that when criminals suspect a house has a gun in it, that they leave that house alone. And that gun owning citizens are less likely to be hurt during a home invasion.

So, does my anecdotal evidence equal yours?
