Gays protest Fort Lauderdale mayor's remarks

Recommended Posts

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/08/fort.lauderdale.mayor/index.html

Does anyone know any more about this? The mayor has made some unpopular remarks and is now being accused of homo-phobia. I cannot comment until I know more about the 2 key issues;
1: Is homosexual activity in public bathrooms really a common occerence?
2: Did the gay/lesbian literature differ from non gay/lesbian literature specifically in terms of the adult content (was it needlessly graphic compared to non-gay/lesbian literature), or was it just because it was gay/lesbian literature.

If gay men are unique in making it a habit to use bathrooms for sex then I think his comment was fair. Are straight people also using public bathrooms for sex?

Also if the literature he tried to block was blatant smut then again I would agree with his decision.

I am curious to see what others may think of this article

>Are straight people also using public bathrooms for sex?

In my experience, yes. I've seen "stuff" going on in public bathrooms between men and women in concert bathrooms and bathrooms by beaches/parks. (I didn't peek into the stall to see what exactly was going on.) Not between women and women because I generally don't go into women's rooms, and I haven't seen any men fooling around with men. But that may well be because the percentage of gays in the population is a lot lower.

But in any case a few comments:

1) Going to single occupancy bathrooms will make sex (with any gender) easier, not more difficult - so it's hard to see how that recommendation is anti-anything.

2) Seems like a tempest in a teapot. He should probably have thought a bit more about how he phrased his suggestion, and the people who objected to it would probably get better results going after someone like the Westboro Baptists than this guy.

From your article

Fort Lauderdale police report there have been four incidents of alleged male sex acts in public bathrooms since November 2005.

Naugle, a six-term mayor, previously sparred with the gay community over his support of the Boy Scouts, who ban gay troop leaders. In a recent interview, Naugle invoked his faith when asked if he thought homosexuality was immoral.

"We're all sinners and you know, you love the sinner and hate the sin," Naugle told WSVN-TV.

OMG four incidents... OMG:o:o:o:o:o

The world is coming to an end... OMG.....:o:o:o

That whole love the sinner bullshit is the keyword the Religious Wrong and Pat Robertson use to try to hate on people and call it love.

DUDE.. sex is EVIL.. YALL are all going straight to HELL... well at least that is what the FAR RIGHT of the rePUBICan party would have you believe...

How about.. just get the FUCK out of peoples bedrooms( and bathrooms) and let the LORD judge.. not have the right wing fucks who cant get laid continually judging people.

Ahhh...those are "public" bathrooms.
How would you like your child walking into one and seeing an actual blowjob happening....regardless of whether its males or man and women ?
I dont give a shit what folks do at home...in their bedrooms or bathrooms but as a member of the "public" I do care what goes on in a restroom one of my kids might frequent.

One more good reason to teach your kids about sex. At least then they'd know what the fuck they're watching rather than being all confused and stuff after seeing two grown men screwing or giving head or whatever....

Ask THIS GUY.He might know.> "
Singer George Michael was caught trawling for sex in a public place yet again. He was forced to come out in 1998 after being caught in a sting by an attractive policeman in a public bathroom in Los Angeles." ---I read they used to have stings in the interstate rest stops bathrooms in Fla. all the time.

I am not sure but I suspect that your commentary was directed as much at me as it was the mayor. Listen, I do not have a strong point of view on this and was throwing it out there for some perspective. I am in no way homophobic and actually am quite supportive of gay rights. I simply was trying to make the point that if (and I emphasise the word if ) members of the gay community were disproportionately engaging in a public behaviour that would be deemed inapropriate for straight or gay people then the issue would have been a fair one to address.

He should have put less of an anti-gay tilt on his comment and just said people having sex in public bathrooms instead of gays, particularly since I would rather not have one of my kids see such behaviour beteen a man/man or man/woman. Obviously his prior commentary makes his motive suspect, but I was more looking at whether or not there was an issue to be adressed or if this was one of those mountain/molehill things.

I still do not know yet if the library issue was one of banning all gay/lesbian literature or if the literature in question was unduly graphic and not appropriate for a public library. Do you have a take on that?

Of course its a mountain out of a molehill.. gotta keep the BASE motivated dont cha know....

Personally I think ANY form of banning literature is a bad thing.... place it in the library... and let those who want to read it.. do so... I was under the opinion that this was AMERICA.... Freedom of Speech.... all the things that are supposed to make this a great country.... not what some ole BITTY who has too much time on her hands finds objectionable or some bible thumping mayor( who should remember to keep HIS CHURCH separated from MY STATE) and wants to get into EVERYONE elses business....

Indeed. Perhaps they could learn in church as well:

Minister Charged With Indecent Exposure

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- The minister of a Baptist church has been charged with indecent exposure and driving under the influence, and police officers say he propositioned them.

Tommy Tester, 58, of Bristol, Va., was wearing a skirt when he was arrested last week after allegedly urinating in front of children at a car wash, police said.

Police also said Tester offered to perform oral sex on officers who were sent to the scene.

Just to play devils advocate, even if we recognise an individuals freedom to express themselves in literature, or the freedom of a store owner to sell objectionable material, does that mean that the taxpayers have to subsidize that expression. We can allow it but do we have to use publicly funded space for that expression. Taxpayers who pay for the public library may want to have a say as to what goes into the library their taxes pay for.

No, we don't.

Agreed. But you have to apply the same standards to everyone. If they get copies of all of Faulkner's works because a few academics want them, then they should get copies of other things that a few other people want - even if many people don't want to see them. It goes both ways.

I find plenty of things objectionable... but I will NOT propose banning them... once upon a time I raised my hand and swore to defend the constitution of this country. That oath cuts both ways...but it means to support ALL of the constitution.. not just the parts you happen to agree with.

I pay a hell of a lot in taxes.... I pay for a LOT of things I dont agree with.. that is part of the deal we get here.

For the most part I agree. Provided the material was not pornographic, there is no reason not to put it in a library ( unless you will create an adults only room). Merely being objectionable would not be good enough reason to stop it.

Again I see a distinct difference between banning something and alocating space for it in a publicly funded library

Fine. I have no strong opinion on this one way or the other; I simply wanted to get a feel for the general mood on this one.

So you don't have a problem with people, gay or not, having sexual relations in a public bathroom?

This is kind of a tangent, but guess what I found as I perused the history on my 10 y/o son's computer. Yep....boobie sites! I don't think he's been traumatized, but I bet he went looking for what he saw. So there is obviously a difference...lol. I suggested that he update his antivirus program regularly and if he got an infestation of pop-ups to let me know. I'd see what I could do to help. HAHAHA!!! Oh my.

To use the term "banning" is misleading, because it implies that there is something going on beyond a library system choosing to not buy something. Libraries are not expected to have every book that is published. Freedom of speech is not related to what a library chooses to put on its shelves.

Do you think the 'religion' of secular humanism should also be kept separate from the state. There is not much to distinguish it from those that thump bibles. My sociology 101 professor at Arizona State University was most definitely a preacher of secular humanism.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Beats the hell out of them having sex on public streets and beaches...

REality is.. some people do it...lock the door get a bit of privacy.. its all good......

OR we could require them to do it in public... and rate them on performance.

Does ANYONE care about all the sex on the beaches of Ft Lauderdale every year...

I seem to remember a couple interesting trips to Ft Lauderdale for spring breaks......once upon a time.. not so long after the movie..." Where the Boys Are" was released.

You do realize he's a democrat dont you. And the whole only 4 incidents isnt a very good defense. Example: I know of not one arrest in my 7 years in Athens GA for people doing coke in bathrooms of bars but I would be surprised if I didnt see it atleast once a night that I go out. Not that I care what happens either way but just noticed your attack on republicans and though it comical, and your 4 incidents rebuke a strawman at best.

Personally I dont give a rats ass if he is Democrat or rePUBICan.....he needs to keep his religion out of his politics... PERIOD....the keywords are there in the article.... it would make Pat Robertson and The Glorius Leader Bush proud..many of them can out thump a bible with the best of them.

Southern local politics is a funny thing.. there are many areas where the local "Democrat" is more closely aligned with the rePUBICans because of factors such as a district that still votes Democratic because they can't get over the Northern War of Agression....although its getting harder to find them.. most of them have gone running to the rePUBICan party because they dont want to be in no party with blacks and gays.

The D after this guys name is clearly a far right wing D( yes they still exist) trying to outdo his conservative R opponents.. bigger bibles.. better thumping.

You do know the Imperious Leader did not go to his Flight Physical when he "served" and was grounded because of that.....they would have found COKE in his golden flow.. he was quite the party boy at the time.
