Basically it's about the same thing. Also, the Finnish site says that they will have a working model up and running in 2008 after which they are looking forward to make commercial models. The scanner (as of now) works up to 30 feet and is about 1 by 2 meters in size (3 by 6 feet). The scanner is "passive" in a sense that it does not emit any rays etc. I wonder how much does the commercial version cost? If they start to sell them in thousands/10000 etc. the price will go down. I think that not in too distant future we'll have these "scanners" in a same manner as we have CCTVs... They are (VTT and NIST) are currently working on similar scanner for bomb etc.
Kennedy 0 #2 May 11, 2007 It's possible that those machines will show up in airports and buildings that have massive security (federal government buildings and monuments) but they will never be as common as cctv. As far as I can tell, the machine/scanner/device would not work outside. That's strike one two and three for proliferating like cctv. Second, and perhaps more important, 99 percent of cctv is only there to make a record in case something happens. Very few cctv feeds are actively monitored. This device, on the other hand, is meant specifically to detect forbidden items. Lastly, heavy garment such as winter coats and other clothing naturally block the heat generated by the human body. I'm not saying this machine will never go anywhere, I'm just saying it's use will be very tailored and specific. (similar to bomb 'sniffer' machines that puff air at you then scan the air) edit: because I was too lazy to proof readwitty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
