In a steam engine the COMBUSTION is EXTERNAL to the working fluid in the cylinder. In an internal combustion engine, the combustion takes place in the working fluid. Internal combustion engines: diesel, gasoline (2 stroke and 4 stroke), gas turbine, rocket External: steam engines (piston and turbine), Stirling engines....
