JohnRich 4 #1 July 21, 2006 News from England:Rise in muggings A big rise in street robberies across England and Wales rocked the Home Office last night... The latest crime figures showed an eight per cent increase in muggings... This included a 10 per cent increase in muggings at gunpoint. The picture is even more stark if the Home Office's favoured crime measure - the British Crime Survey - is used. This polls 45,000 people about their experiences and it shows a 22 per cent rise in robberies. Violent offences have also gone up again...Source: The Telegraph

Wait a minute. I forgot - guns aren't generally legal in the UK! Therefore, that 10% is a clear, unambiguous indication that guns in the US deter crime and make everyone safe. mr2mk1g 10 #9 July 21, 2006 Up 8% this year, down 12% last year, down 19% over the last 5 years, overall violent crime down by 43% over the last 10 years. Sounds a lot like background noise against an overall downward trend to me - but who knows what it'll look like as part of an overall trend when we look back on it in another 10 years. Homicides by the way are down by 12% - and thats when you include the 7% of the number who were killed in the 7/7 underground bombings (ie they would be down by a much greater proportion if you discount those killed in that single terrorist attack).
billvon 2,898 #10 July 21, 2006 >how do yu come to that claim? Sorry, I initially thought that the 10% rise was an indication that crime goes up in areas that have high gun ownership. Since everyone knows that guns prevent crime, it would have to have been a statistical anomaly. But then I realized that it meant that muggings were up 10% in an area WITHOUT a lot of guns - so it is, as you say, a meaningful number.

Red_Skydiver 0 #12 July 21, 2006 Yawn, yawn, YAWN! The other day you started a thread stating that Englands homicides had soared. The annual crime figures actually show a 12% decrease. so now you try to attack us from another angle. Yes street robberies are up.... probably because people carry so much expensive stuff with them nowadays and it makes easy pickings. What we need are more police patrolling the streets on foot. billvon 2,898 #15 July 21, 2006 > Just like America - where no-one's ever mugged? Well, you can still be mugged if you're not carrying a gun - and many americans are foolish enough to go out unarmed, helpless and vulnerable to crime. Carrying a gun would fix all that. Remember, you're safer in Baghdad carrying a gun than you are in Salt Lake City walking around unarmed. A recent study by the NRA proved this.
