oldfartsrule 0 #1 April 14, 2017 If one is a military rigger, but does not have an faa license, can you legally pack civilian gear?
mark 102 #2 April 14, 2017 It depends. Is the rig going to be used for military operations, say, as an instructor/camera rig for military freefall training? Is the rig civilian-owned, going to be used by a civilian at a civilian dz? Is the rig owned by the military, but going to be used for fun jumps at a civilian dz? Please be as specific as you can. Also, are you "asking for a friend?" -Mark
oldfartsrule 0 #3 April 15, 2017 Basically, military rigger with no faa license packing civilian pilot emergency rigs for use in civilian aircraft.and no not asking for a "friend". Just found out about the situation and wondering if it is legal ?
mark 102 #4 April 15, 2017 Well, then, no. Not legal. Quote§65.111 Certificate required. (a) No person may pack, maintain, or alter any personnel-carrying parachute intended for emergency use in connection with civil aircraft of the United States (including the reserve parachute of a dual parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping) unless that person holds an appropriate current certificate and type rating issued under this subpart and complies with §§65.127 through 65.133. mark 102 #6 April 15, 2017 Also, the pilot is at risk: Quote§91.307 Parachutes and parachuting. (a) No pilot of a civil aircraft may allow a parachute that is available for emergency use to be carried in that aircraft unless it is an approved type and has been packed by a certificated and appropriately rated parachute rigger
masterrigger1 2 #7 April 17, 2017 Quote If one is a military rigger, but does not have an faa license, can you legally pack civilian gear? You can pack it all you want, but to be used in the USA or one of the countries following FAA regulations it just comes down to this one thing. If the airplane used to jump out of is a civilian registered aircraft, the rig must be packed by a civilian rated rigger. The regulations offer no other avenue. This means even if the aircraft is being used by the military unless in times of war. This is why the FAA offers the Military Comp Rating. A military rigger can simply take a written exam and be issues a certificate, MELSkyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
bill6870 3 #8 April 17, 2017 This also applies if it is used for aerobatics. Blue Skies
BIGUN 1,051 #9 April 17, 2017 Military Rigger = Military personnel jumping military rigs from military aircraft.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
dpreguy 14 #10 April 19, 2017 As I recall, an active military parachute rigger may make the application for the civilian senior rating at any time; however the applicant/military parachute rigger has only a time period of one year from discharge to make that application for the civilian senior parachute rigger rating. There is a special written test in the CATS system for military riggers applicants to take and pass prior to being issued the civilian certificate. It is a 25 q test.
