Nightingale 0 #26 May 11, 2005 I wouldn't mind so much with regards to smoking on sidewalks, if people didn't do it two steps outside the building so you have to walk through a cloud of smoke to enter or exit.

Which ironically is driven by us forcing them outside, and not allowing the option of a smoking room. So now you see signs requiring 25 or 50ft, so the gauntlet has been shifted slightly further away. At some point we have to acknowledge that most smokers are being pretty accommodating, esp in light of suggestions like your's that sidewalks and parks should be off limits as well. Nightingale 0 #29 May 12, 2005 I wouldn't have any problem at all with a smoking room, so long as it is very separate from the non-smoking area (someone who works in a building shouldn't be forced to have a desk right next to that room because they'd probably get a lot of second hand smoke). I don't care if people smoke. I care that I have to breathe it. If I don't have to breathe it, I don't give a damn where people smoke.

kelpdiver 2 #33 May 12, 2005 I still go to Vegas, but it definitely has an impact on what I do there (read, less time at the tables), and I don't bother packing nicer clothes for the weekend. If I'm going to get smoked all over, I'm going to slum it a bit. It's surprising that one casino doesn't try going non smoking to see what happens. Nightingale 0 #34 May 12, 2005 I will only go to vegas when the hotel has a non-smoking room available as well as a non-smoking casino. Most hotels have them now. It sucks when you're on a winning streak at blackjack and have to walk away because someone sat down next to you with a cigarette.
newsstand 0 #35 May 13, 2005 So lets get rid of the fire rules about how many people can be in a building and screw it bars and resaturants don't need bathrooms either. We have all kinds of laws that have to do with public safety. Seventy-five percent of the population does not smoke. Why should I be subjected to the dangerous will of the minority? "Truth is tough. newsstand 0 #37 May 13, 2005 No because I won't go. I used to be a two pack a day smoker without going to a special event. At that point it became chain smoking. Had several people said "hey lets go to this non-smoking venue" I would have whined enough to make everyone go somewhere else which would have forced them in to a smoking venue. Most musicians are hungry and can't afford to say "Make it a no-smoking event or I won't play." Ditto for club staff. This is not going to kill the majority of clubs and those that it does had bigger buiness issues. A few club owners might be hurt temporarily but thier staffs will move on to other, similar, jobs. From what I have heard there has been no overall negative impact on cities where these bans have been imposed. You know small towns like New York City. "Truth is tough.
