Other than a Mirage RSL to an older Mirage G4?

Recommended Posts

can you be more specific? the only lanyard you can legally use is what mirage supplies. TSO compliant and all that. As for the risers, you can use any that have an rsl ring on the proper side... this is all assuming the rig is fitted with the velcro/channel and the double rings on the reserve top flap.

Hi Alexg,

TSO compliant and all that.

The Mirage was certificated under TSO C23b. In that ( TSO C23b ) & NAS 804 there is no mention of a RSL.

The Skyhook is also not a TSO'd item as the Vector ( all versions ) is also certficated under C23b.

While some may disagree, I contend that the RSL on a Mirage is not a TSO part.

I would never bet Jerry against on matters pertaining to TSO. I you do you will lose.

granted mirage may have different views, but if there is an rsl, its function has to be tested and approved. I specifically remember seeing a tso label on my wifes mirage rsl lanyard... there was actually a discussion a while back where people were arguing you had to use the rsl and not remove it because it would make the assembly not what was tso tested.... i may be missing details but that was the gist of it...

In reference to Sunpath having gone bizarrely strict on RSL's:

The Javelin was C23c Cat B for everything approximately before Oct. 2001, after which the design was recertified C23d. So the situation will be different than for Mirage's C23b.

Mirage is certified under TSO C-23b (issued 1962), no mention of RSL. The current Mirage is manufactured under the TSO approval of a rig designed and approved in the late 70's, just as the Vector III is manufactured under TSO C-23b approval of the Wonderhog in the 1970's.

Javelin's latest TSO is C-23d (issued 1994), which requires testing of an RSL during required breakaway testing.

Two very different certification standards.

Rigs that were certified under TSO-C23b were tested to the standards of AS 804 which makes no reference to an RSL.

Jep, rig itself is RSL ready and so are the risers (Mirage). My problem is that RSL lanyards with velcro are difficult to come by. Even Chutingstar is out of stock.

...............................................................

As long as the replacement RSL is the same length (as the original) it is easy for a Master Rigger to sew on a piece of Velcro.
Hint: it helps if he can copy a genuine Mirage RSL's stitch pattern.

Sometimes a Master Rigger can substitute an RSL from another manufacturer, but that raises a whole bunch of compatibility questions.

They are in stock now, and we always have more on the way when we run out...or we can convert a Velcro to Velcroless or vice-versa. http://www.chutingstar.com/skydive/rig-parts/rsls/replacement-mirage-rsl-lanyard
