Cannot arch

Recommended Posts

HI, I am new to the sport with 8 jumps. I am presently at level 4 IAF, and have stayed there for three jumps due to an inability to arch, which has lead to an unstable freefall. I went to a Physiacal Therapist for stretching and strenghtening excercises that I am hoping will help , if even a little. My problem stems from a back problem in which my fifth lumbar vertebra has shifted forward substantially on my sacrum. While it can be quite painful, to date it has been manageable...............Any suggetsions?

Continue with the stretching to stay as limber as possible. You will also do well to learn to keep your arms and legs relaxed and how to use them in lieu of a good back arch. One aid might be a weight-loaded belt worn around the waist, to help you in the early going. This will emphasis your center of gravity. Discuss with your instructor...

Try gentle passive stretches with a rolled-up towel cross-wise under your back; gradually increase the height of the towel. Just lie there and let your body stretch-if you force it you will hurt yourself. If you have access to a gym with a sauna steam room or Jacuzzi, warm up first, then just lie with the towel under the part you need to stretch.
