I had a brown belt in Jujitsu, did a little Judo, Iado, and Kali. My Jujitsu club also had one night a week where we did Capoweira. I fenced Sabre in college (athletic scholarships are wonderful). After starting to jump, I quit the college athletics (too much time away). Currently I do Yoga, blading, beach volleyball and normal stuff @ the gym.

*I used to scuba dive in the 70's and 80's, worked for awhile as a diver while going to college but quit it since working as diver can be pretty nasty.
* I hang glided for a bit, and got my hang level 1 certificate, then had to quit to to job problems and needing the money.
* I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and used to teach but gave it up years ago because of a bad back. I tried boxing when I was really young, got in a Golden Gloves tourney in the novice class and decided it was not for me. Played rugby for while which was fun but I spent every Sunday relaxing and trying to make the bruises and pain go away (usually through beer).
* I snow ski (intermediate), shoot competitively, ride my motorcycle, used to swim in a masters program for while.
* Skydiving is probably the most adrenaline charged thing I've ever done. Which is probably why many people get freaked out by it, since there is no starting out gently like other sports - you're either flying out of a plane at 120 mph or you're not skydiving at all. Nothing in between.

* I disagree with you on your theory people getting hurt. Some people just have bad jusdgement period - I've seen that in motorcycling a lot. and the other ones are very experienced people who choose to push the envelope and know that they are risking serious injuries. It doesn't mean that they have bad jusdgement but instead think the rewards outweigh the risk of injury.

I snow ski very badly.. a lot faster than I should for my skill level. I used to scuba dive a lot. over 4,000 hours of bottom time on Scuba and over 5,000 hard hat commercial. Skydiving is so much nicer...

Finally an area I can give some advice on....Always use the hill. If you are going too fast for your skill, you're not traversing enough. If you head up hill, you will always slow down. It's the law of gravity.

Safe skiing and blue skies.:)

Me too!
However, I found that when I finally made myself turn down the hill is when I finally began to be a confident skier. I realize that this is all a matter of skill levels, but if you traverse too much, you'll never get down the hill, and you will not have as much fun.

Yeah I know. And it always sucks when ski patrol has to go out looking for you after the lifts close.:D
LOL! I can't tell you how many times in my younger days I'd watch those woods approach but be completely unable to make myself turn!:D

Now commonly referred to as doing a "Bono" or a "Michael Kennedy".

I know, pretty crass, but skiiers can be just as brutal as skydivers.:S

The last time I realized my limits was in Wrightwood. there's a run at the top that has a skull and crossbones with the words. "don't even think about it" I knew I was in trouble when my skis stuck out over the edge like 2 feet before I started down the hill.... I lived.. LOL

So what am I, the only person here who's just a couch potato that likes to jump out of planes?

Skydiver 1: "Last weekend I hit Aspen, did some slopes".
Skydiver 2: "Yeah, I did some mountain climbing, what about you Mark?"
Me: "uh, got in a few hours of Counterstrike...."

I have ridden motorcycles since I was six years old. I raced motocross for two years, then later in life raced a an ATC 250R ATV. I was riding skateboards as soon as urethane wheels were invented and rode on three sponsored teams when in junior high and high school. I surf with some degree of expertise and have a 6'4" Charlie Baldwin thruster (comp weight) in my toy room. Also in that toy room are my Gnu Pharoah snowboard which I rip on, my H.O. VTX slalom with double high-wraps which I competed for some time on, and my Hyperlite Dean Lavelle signature wakeboard that I can throw three different flips on. I have a 96 Sea Doo XP with a Solas prop and an R&D scoop grate and ride plate. It's fast enough to barefoot behind (with my masterline toe-handle) while wearing my SkiWarm Violator barefoot suit. I can do flips, one-foot toe-holds, and tumble turn my ass off; not to mention the jump starts off 20 foot tall boat docks.

Bottom line is that I have always been into serious "type A" recreation and have always pushed the limits in each and every one of the sports I have chose to commit to. I don't half ass anything; never have. My only regret is that I don't have enough free time to give to each and every one of these fantastically fun endeavours. It is because of these other things that it took me 21 and a half years to reach 3000 skydives. I really wanted to try EVERYTHING and get good at each of them while I was young and fit. I don't regret any of it for a second, as I am still, as a 38 year old man, able to get out when I can and throw down some mad tricks in those other things I learned during my breaks from skydiving. Sure, I don't have the stamina I did when I was in peak form for whatever it was I was doing, but I CAN still do all the "tricks" given a short warm-up.

I guess the difference there, if there is one:P, is that I did indeed take the proper time to learn the right way to do things. I just didn't strap on a snowboard and go huck off jump and try to do a flip. I knew that was a quick way to break my neck. Likewise, it is very stupid to think you are going to be able to get away with swooping a VX right off of student status. There is a serious "I want it now" mentality in skydiving; this is evident. People are led to believe that for the right price, time in sport means nothing. "Gimme a dollar and I'll make you holler!" Just try that in surfing and see what happens. Show up at some pristine break in your smacky-booty wetsuit and your new stick and just TRY to break into the lineup. You will more than likely get run over, beat up, or both. Until you have the required skill set and have established yourself with the locals, you are fucked; at least at popular breaks.

Sorry for rambling, but I had a lot to say.

Chuck
