Honestly, I never expect the Libertarian candidate to win. My votes are more in support of legitimizing the party. That and showing the Republicrat majority that at least some of us think there has to be a better way...

Yep, it's only "throwing your vote away" as long as fricking idiots keep believing the weasels who say that. What, maybe a quarter of eligible voters got to the polls yesterday? So that means something like seventy five percent of America thinks the two party thing just ain't doing the trick.

If we keep convincing just a few more that they ought to try something else, pretty soon it WON'T be a two party system.

That the only purpose of government is to protect people from violence and coercion. They favor removal of most restrictions on businesses, international trade, personal life, homeowners etc. They also favor a much smaller government, funded by user fees instead of taxes.

What is the Libertarian platform?

In a nutshell, to reduce government to a less intrusive, less bureaucratic level; more like what we had in the years prior to the 20th century. To be honest, what originally attracted me to the party is their stance on the legalization of drugs - they're for it. But once I began to research them I found that I agree with most of what they stand for - personal responsibility, individual liberty, a free market economy and a non-interventionist foreign policy.

You can check them out in detail on the party's website

Some of the key issue perspectives from Libertarians are:

Death penalty: abolish
Immigration: free and unrestricted
Drugs: legalization

I lean toward their views of personal freedom and responsibility, but don't think it's realistic to have no central fiscal body for infrastructure, etc.

One of our local libertarian candidates, when asked what he thought should be done about polluters (I live in Houston, home to lots of chemical plants and shipping), said nothing. The polluters should pay the people they harmed directly.

I understand the sentiment there, but, y'know, I just can't see them doing it somehow. "The line starts here for people we should pay."

Here are my political views:

1) The Democrats and the Republicans are all about 80-90% full of shit.

2) The whole left-wing/right-wing model is bullshit. The concept of trying to place your political stance on a single, one-dimensional axis is stupid, when you consider all the different issues we are faced with.

3) I respect someone more, even if their political views differ from mine on certain issues, as long as they aren't one of those party-line ditto-heads, who accept absolutely everything their party leaders tell them just because it's "their" party! Damn why don't you join a f&*king cult or something.

4) I have specific views on specific issues, and I don't care which party agrees with me on which issues. With great reservations, I have had to register as a Democrat because I live in Maryland, a staunchly Democratic state, and I want to be able to vote in the primaries, and Democrat covers most of the candidates.:P

5) I still feel that the optimum government would be ME as an unapologetic, yet enlightened, supreme dictator of Planet Earth.:)

So why is it that when you go and vote, you always vote for, but not against?

As for initiatives, it makes sense to just vote yay, or nay.

As for candidates running for office, I may not necessarily like any of them. I guess one could write-in a candidate thereby not giving any of them your vote. But why can't we vote against one particular individual thereby lowering their count?

Just a thought.

I think more the purpose of the two parties isn't that everyone or anyone believes exactly the same as the other, but more that we agree on these certain core issues, i.e. abortion, flat tax (which there should be one), affermative action. And everything else we will support you on if you support us on this or that. It's basically one hand washes the other.

My personnal views are that we need to down size government a lot. We need to let states and local governments handle more. We should eliminate welfare in it's current form. We should legalize marajunia, but keep strict laws on growing it. I.e having to have a permit to grow it. There should be a strait 12 percent income tax with no deductions and a 1 or 2 percent FEDERAL sales tax. We would have more money than we do now. And a lotta of other stuff too that I go into.

I don't know mabey I'm rambling, but politics and religion always fires me up.

Just some thoughts about the way you americans use the word liberal.
I was looking for the "conservative, liberal" poll option that best describes my political POV.

Norway right now is ruled by a conservative coalition. Every time they try to, privatize anything, allow easier access to alcohol or porn, some socialist or former communist throws a tiny-fisted tantrum: "Think of the children! These liberal tendencies must stop!" They are also very fond of blaming everything that is wrong on "neo-liberalism".
I think it is strange that you americans equal more liberal==more to the left.

Whoa Lisa, thats kinda radical, I've been flamed for talking about such policies here bfore.....

Hell they'd get my vote, but wait a minute, I can't vote in the US...dagnabbit.

Chris, can you change your poll to include the 'Liberal Democrats' which sounds like the UK equivalent to your libertarians.....

I'm registered as an Independant. I may vote Democrat, Republican or Other depending on who the candidate is, and if I like where they stand on the issues. I don't really care for either party.

That said, if I were elected president...the US would be a MUCH nicer place:P

JT,

I was referring to you never wanting to discuss religion or politics with friends. It was just me teasing ya...hence the "wink". Nathan taught me that trick.;)

It's all cool JT. You can be anything you want to be.
