What does it mean?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, English is my second language, can anyone explain what this means: "Lines will be 500 vectran finger trapped and bar tacked just like on skydiving canopy". What does finger trapped and bar tacked means in plain English? Thanks!

Finger-trapped is when one line has it's core opened up with a tool called a Fid and another line is pushed into the center of the 1st line's core.

The outside line tightens down around the 2nd line inside of it like a 'Chinese finger-trap' toy.

The junction is then sewn over with what's called a bar-tack to lock it that way.

It's called a 'bar-tack' because it kinda looks like a bar running down the line.

A finger-trap is a method of joining one line into another, by passing one line through the weave of the other and into the hollow sheath inside that line. It's named after the Chinese finger-trap toy in which you insert a finger in each end of a woven tube, and when you try to remove your fingers, the weave just tightens up and your fingers are trapped. This same principle is used for joining many parachute lines, because the tension on the line helps hold the joint together.

You secure the finger-trap joint in position by sewing a bar-tack over it, which is a zig-zag stitch in a tight pattern. You have to be careful to make sure the needle is passing through the line tucked inside the other, by not making the stitch length too wide.

I'm not even sure, SkyCountry is designing some kind of speedflying wing that supposably you'll be able to jump from the plane with.. my friend asked me this question, I wasn't sure. Don't ask me why you would want to jump out of airplane with a speedlying wing.. can't figure it out myself.. :|
