painting helmet

I've looked through the archives and cant find anything on this, but i apologize in advance if I missed an old discussion on the topic.

I just got a new helmet and want to give it my own custom paint job. Wondering what steps are necessary to paint it (i.e. sand down helmet first, pre coat, etc). Also, what paint is good to use if i want to hand draw something on it vs. airbrush?
