What "should" my Argus say when it's "ready"?

Recommended Posts

Bill,
I already covered this one in follow-up posts. If I jumped to the wrong conclusion? Fair enough, that one is on me.

For the record, I don't have it in for Aviacom. I have seen & heard things about their responses (& even more important to me, their non-responses) during & after the bannings. This, & my level of low-timer understanding of the Argus, lead me to not want to jump their product. There are some on this board who seem to love to jump on Aviacom. I mean regular posters, not the plants w/a clear agenda. What may have been misunderstood about my posts on this, is my growing frustration. I had posted a link to an NTSB report about people being killed by an AAD. Until someone had brought that report to my attention. I had no idea about that incident. I doubt many other Newbs had ever heard of it, either (including a friend who recently bought one for the same reasons I would have).

I come to these boards, in large part, to learn how not to get seriously F'ed up &/or killed. This is info I need to make gear choices. I know a wealth of knowledge is here on the board. Yet, whenever an AAD thread gets started? It's like someone wants to discuss the virtues of kiddy porn or something... It gets squashed/deleted almost immediately. I don't understand the unwillingness of putting just the facts out there. Emotions run high on this subject. That's clear. How about a locked thread w/only official reports on it? Then, A) We can see the different incidents that have occurred. &, B) We can discuss them w/our mentors. The discussions don't have to occur here @all. Is it sponsorship issues, advertisers, what? It's paradoxical that a board whose function is to disseminate info, refuses to do so on this one topic. What is the problem?

There are so many threads about AAD issues/problems, so much info very much available. How can you think it is not? So much info is available than when stupid threads and wild accusations against mods are posted, they get appropriately locked/deleted. That doesn't change the availability of what is still there.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

I already said that bogus, biased smear-tactics should get squashed. I've no more interest in reading them than anyone else. If there already exists a thread w/the info like I mentioned here. Please show me where. Granted, I haven't done a general search for one on the forums. Why? Because it seems pointless. Every time a thread gets started. It disappears almost as quickly.

The device is also working in this configuration.
It's a "feature" for technical use.

Now I understand the reluctance to post the fix publicly.

None of us have any reason to be in those menus. Now that it's been posted, I can foresee bozos plying with them and really screwing things up.
My reality and yours are quite different.

That's one way of looking at it and . . .

>I already said that bogus, biased smear-tactics should get squashed. I've no more

That's another. We try to make sure good information (reports on AAD malfunctions, manufacturer's responses, commentary on how they work like this thread) stays up but the crap (paranoid conspiracy theories, baseless attacks on other people/companies/gear, grossly distorted facts etc) is minimized.

Drawing that line is not always easy, since some of the more disruptive posters will do things like create multiple logins and post the same material in multiple forums to try to get their conspiracy theories out there. So do we delete all the stuff they post? Or do we edit it down to the actual facts? Can we trust someone like that to post _any_ facts? If we delete their thread, do we try to extract and re-post people's replies to it, which may contain useful info? We try to make judgment calls on that line, and we don't always hit it 100%.

As an aside, if people do feel that a thread on AAD's (or any topic) is going off-track please PM us. If you feel that there's a thread that's really useful to you personally also tell us about that, so we can try to encourage/retain such threads even when they get contentious. That way we get some feedback on what people are finding useful.

All it is, is a diagnostic display. He said the unit is still operational in this mode, just displaying things that most users wouldn't care to see.

Hell, most users don't know anything more than blink-push. [:/]

As far as I could tell, I used it in that configuration for all the jumps I did on it, but truthfully, I have no idea if it would have fired.

Do you think it is wise to jump with an AAD of whichever brand, that shows something on the display that you can't interpret? I think the manual says pretty clear what must be shown on the display when it is ready to jump. Anything else can be dangerous for you ans your fellow jumpers.

You are absolutely correct, but like I said, the screen made sense to me, I just hadn't compared it to the manual, nor to my alternate unit. The screen showed the detected altitude (0 on the ground), and vertical speed (0 as well). That made sense to me when I saw "0" for both. When I had both units on, side by side, that's what triggered me to notice the difference. Up until then, I only had one unit and the screen I saw made sense to me. With the second one beside it, that's when I said "wait a second".

The unit started normally and passed it's self checks as I expected it to, so I saw no reason to investigate further. I had no reason to believe it should have shown anything else. Yeah, I'm a dumbass for not checking a manual, but unless I'm triggered to believe there's a problem, I had nonreason to compare the display to what the manual said.

And yes, I did read the manual, but by the time it was installed and tested, I must have overlooked that.
