Greatest guitarists of all time - Press Clips

"Greatest"? Read - "Most Successful". They've left off some brilliant performers, like one of my faves, Jaco Pastorius.

I agree with some of the list. Hendrix, for example, was absolutely fearless, and was a true groundbreaker.

They're leaving a lot of musicians off their list, tho, because they're not rock or blues artists.

And Billy Gibbons was left off the list. I'm a bit cheesed about that.

Other guitarists completely ignored by this highly subjective list include Andres Segovia and his protege, the amazing Sharon Isbin.

Doubt she'll ever make the cover of Rolling Stone.>:(

anybody heard of Ingve Malmstein (sp)???

ahh... the other wingi. great technician who regurgitates paganini thinking noone will notice.

you guys have covered a lot of ground. a bunch of second rate band members are included in all of the lists.

django couldnt even pick his nose with his left hand but gawd what an amazing guitarist. with the equivalent of two fat fingers on his left. amazing.

jaco - beautiful, beautiful.

jimmy-->stevie. channelling? no matter - fretbound emotion freed like a genie in a bottle. p.s. jimmy sucked playing lead, but his rhythm chops are a thing of beauty.

page? bb? SANTANA? billboard leaders maybe. great performers, yes. inspirational guitarist? no.
namaste, motherfucker.

Yeah, where's clapton? Talk about greatest of all time, people used to say he was GOD. And yes, BB King is overrated. Certainly not in the top 10. And although I'm not a big GnR fan, I'd have to put Slash in my personal top ten for coming up with some of the most amazing melodies I've ever heard. And Keith Richards? C'mon. The list sucks. It's obvious they didn't put a lot of thought into it, just thought of the most popular ones and put them at the top.

Have to agree with Sunman on a few of those - Richards isn't the greatest and tends to emulate most of the better blues guitarists out there. I have a soft spot for BB King, but have to agree that Slash, Clapton, Eddie VanHalen, Satriani, Santana, Vai all could have taken some of the top spots. What about Winters? I also felt that Cliff Burton played the Bass much better than most six-stringers....

Edit to add - just looking over the list. The whole thing is a joke since they have Kurt Cobain on there. Any HS garage band can play as good as that guy did - he was nothing special.

Yeah, there are a number if issues with this one. Eddie Van Halen and Rhoads down that far? There was rock guitar before Van halen, and there was guitar after him.

But some other interesting choices. They'll put Henry Vestine of Canned Heat but not Walter Trout??? Trout was the single most amazing gutiarist I ever saw in person (only slightly better than, yes, Stevie Winwood).

D. Boon of the Minutemen was also a cool choice. Great band if you never heard them (Mike Watt was their bass player - can we talk?)

Somebody's gotta put in a good word for Jerry Garcia. At least the younger Jerry at his peak, 1972 - '77. The guy only had 9 1/2 fingers and was a trained bluegrass banjo master (which explains a lot of his sound on electric guitar) and for a while was even playing some pretty good pedal steel. Whether he was playing acoustic or electric, he wove ragtime, jazz, folk, blues, and good old rock'n'roll into some some strange and interesting places. He went into a long decline with heroin, but some of us are old enough to remember Jerry playing the most beautiful stuff with this peaceful "alpha centauri" gaze in his eyes. I just loved the guy.

The rest of the list, and everyone else's suggestions by the way, are right on !
