Pawning off argus. Dirty

Recommended Posts

Has anyone noticed all the argus aads for sale in dz.com. Not one if them posted in there description that they ar ban in most rigs now. I feel bad for the newbies trying to buy an aad and think their getting a deal. Yes u should do research before u buy but some people are so exited about this sport they just want to jump in and buy everything fast. I find this dirty.

DZ.com classifieds can be buyer beware. Rookies should be using a resource like a trusted instructor and their local rigger when buying gear.

Rig for sale: Racer with a Raven reserve, Argus AAD and a Nova main. All the best money can buy!

Frankly if someone is buying skydiving equipment and they know so little about it they don't deserve any pity. I am not talking about people from a week or two ago.

Skydiving equipment is not like buying a used TV off e-bay your life depends on it.

You see it as pawning off. Some people see it as buying a good investment in the hope that when all this blows over they regain their value.

That's just dumb.

People often get sold on shit equipment directly from their own dropzone. "GREAT STARTER RIG!!!" ... when in fact it's a 1992 vector 2 with a leg pouch throw out or possibly a loose BOC conversion. A Falcon 195 with 850 jumps on it and original lines, Swift reserve.

All the components are worn and are not worthy of being sold to an unsuspecting newbie.

If people want to by an Argus, fine, let em but I don't think it's wise. If the buyer doesn''t know about the SB, it's not remotely OK to slip it past them.

An Argus SB should be posted on the Classifieds in case someone doesn't see gear and rigging.

I don't condone people trying to rip someone off. But surely people are not dumb enough to buy any old crap and expect to jump it? Surely it is common sense to have a basic understanding of your equipment in a sport like this? If you don't do background checks on the status of an AAD, harness or reserve and get a properly qualified opinion on it then your judgement is seriously flawed (in my opinion).

I like your idea of a SB being posted in classifieds. In fact as a specialised gear store of sorts it would be nice to see any SB's attached to specific models so that buyers are fully educated in one place.

I find it a good opportunity to get some lower cost AAD's!

I completely agree.... You are buying something at a valid lower then normal market value that was generated by a ban by multiple H/C manufacturers. People want to sell them now compared to waiting to see if they come back in value. Buying them at a few hundred or less is fine as the seller wants to gt rid of it, no one is making them agree to sell at a lower price. People take risks all the time in the money markets around the world by being willing to risk an investment on a future return. Why not! If a seller is trying to sell at an inflated price based on the current situation to uninformed buyers then shame on him but the act of buying them and betting they return in value os 100% Fine....

I'll give you two expired bus transfers, a button, some pocket lint, and a melted kitkat bar.

Well ..the Racer and the Raven were "OK" ...and the Nova was good down to about 75' AGL ...and you're not supposed to depend on an AAD anyway. So, not too bad if the price is right!:D (I'll trade you a Sodfarm container for it.):)

I'm interested only if it's a Raven Dash-MZ

thats fine if your investing in them to resell when their fixed, but note in your description that the aad is no longer allowed in most rigs. its about looking out for your brothers & sisters. for all the people saying oh well you should of done your research. all i have to say to that is wow , i would not want you by my side if i were still in the military. in a sport as where you rely on your equipment so much i would expect everyone to watch each others backs.

Hey! thats me. But I knew ahead of time that it needed mods, my rigger, added a BOC, and proper bridal protection, and a cypress pouch. So, a 1991 vector 2 can be a great starter rig if you know whats wrong with it and what work it needs.

And.... you don't freefly in it because the riser covers will not stay shut. The main flap MIGHT stay shut. The reserve cover flap might but probably won't stay shut.

Don't mistake freeflying for attempting to go head down or trying to get in a sit a few times :)

Edit. BTW, it's bridle not bridal. I figured you may like to know it's ok to not care about getting married, but it's not ok, to leave the bridle free to roam about the place while in freefall.

Tough call because yes you should research the equipment but how many non-riggers are aware of the SB? Joe newbie could ask his instructor and get a green light.

I'm up in the air about the Argus sales. If the company goes bankrupt over this then everyone who has one could own an expensive paperweight. If they make it through they will no doubt find a replacement cutter and people will have picked up an inexpensive AAD. Personally I hope they manage to pull through and do something about the issue.

Nigel,
You'll find that "common sense" is at a premium these days. You'll find that flawed judgment is more common than common sense these days.

OTOH, flawed judgment with respect to buying gear could be nothing more than lack of knowledge. Some people have to be spoon fed and if nobody feeds then correct info they have no foundation on which to develop good judgment.

Yes, call me a cynic if you like but there ya go.

You young jumpers out there (and I'm not talking about age)...take charge of your learning! Ask questions, read, initiate conversations with people!
It's a grand idea to do that before you act.
My reality and yours are quite different.

This is a great piece of advice that needs to be repeated to the newbies constantly. Hopefully they will heed this but sometimes in their enthusiasm they don't.
Case in point.
There's a newbie at my DZ that just wouldn't listen to us. One weekend he showed up with some equipment he bought and wanted me to inspect it for him. It was a Wonderhog with a 26' LoPo reserve. My first inclination was to laugh. But I bit my tongue and explained the problems with this very outdated technology and issues of airworthiness. He got taken by his own ignorance, enthusiasm, and worst of all, not listening to his instructors.

So do I. But it doesn't usually sit their for long, it gets jumped regularly.

I gave this one to amstalder, but, she's given me permission to put it in the breeze if I want to.

Still trying to decide if I wanna see the look on peoples faces when I go to load up with a 'hog (which, is funny, because my V3-M is the same TSO and all) :D
