ChileRelleno 0 #1 December 24, 2003 Hi'ya people! Chile is home for the holidays and very lucky to be alive and so are some other folks. Yesterday while rolling southbound on I-85 thru Salibury,NC I topped a small rise only to find brake lights and white smoke in front of me with multiple cars stopped ,stopping and more than one vehicle occupying one lane... I stood on the brakes(literally)and still wasn't able to stop my 77,000lbs+ of 18 wheeler in time and impacted two vehicles from the rear who had already sideswiped each other and were side by side, slightly offset and at angles to each other in the fastlane, one of them had hit the vehicle in front of it... I was the coup de grace. The first two cars are most likely totaled, the third had already rolled forward far enough after their initial impact to be clear of my secondary and my truck sustained significant damage to the left side front. Only one driver was taken to a hospital for possible neck injuries, THANK GOD! It could have been ALOT worse. I have eyewitnesses from a construction crew working the area who said that the whole thing was set in motion by people locking their brakes on a very busy interstate for a kittie who dashed across the road.... They also told the state troopers that they thought I did a great job trying to shut it down and my impact speed was aprox 25mph(theres a lot of kinetic energy in 77,000lbs) A frickinfrackin CAT!!!!!!!These dumbshits risked human life trying not to hit a worthless CAT!!!!!!! My truck is in Charlotte,NC for repairs, I had to take Breath alcohol and urine drug test, had the state troopers trying hard to find something wrong with my logbooks(there wasn't), I (the professional driver) was the only one to receive a ticket (failure to control speed resulting in collision), my neck and back are sore, I had to leave most of my possessions and catch a Greyhound home to Alabama and last but not least my spotless safety record is now smudged and I'll receive a royal asschewing and company probation. Now I concede that I hold some fault, it was a rear-end collision, hind sight is 20/20,could've,should've and would've ect... So I ask you what do you think? skybytch 259 #3 December 24, 2003 Hit the kitty (sorry kitty). I've heard too many stories about people dying because they (or someone in front of them) tried to avoid an animal in the road. I've taken out two deer in the past; a bit of bent metal on the front end in both cases was far better than what could have happened had I swerved or slammed on my brakes... tunaplanet 0 #5 December 24, 2003 Sometimes you have to swerve way off the road to hit the smaller ones. Those small ones are QUICK!!!!! Forty-two
EdC 0 #6 December 24, 2003 Hit the animal and don't think twice. Cats are a dime a dozen and it should not have been on the freeway. Bummer about the rig, have a nice x-mas. Big Ed

sdgregory 0 #14 December 24, 2003 I said shoulda hit the kitty but more accurately, I say punch, aim for it and make sure you flatten it good. Then slam on the breaks, put the car in reverse and run it over again. Make sure it cannot run out in front of another car
dbattman 0 #15 December 24, 2003 I'm not up to spepd on the whole CDL thing, but why did you get the extreme scrutiny? Why wasn't the person who caused the pileup charged for creating an obstruction? From what you've said, it sounds like you just didn't have enough stopping distance and your view ahead was obstructed by the rise in the road.
sdgregory 0 #16 December 24, 2003 I do not know where you drive put where I drive the person to smack the pile last usually gets the ticket for A.) Following too close behind or B.) Failure to use do care or C.) Failure to maitain proper following distance However you word it, the guy in back get's the ticket even if it really was not his fault. dbattman 0 #17 December 24, 2003 I disagree. If my view ahead is obstructed and someone is stopped in the road ahead I may not have enough time to stop. Am I speeding? No. Am I following too close? No. Am I exercising due care? See # 1 and #2 above. How about one of those idiots who stand on their brakes in the exit lane next to the big sign that says "KEEP MOVING"? If I'm behind and I tap them, it is MY fault? Oh- and I would've plastered the cat as well.

freeflir29 0 #19 December 24, 2003 Quote I do not know where you drive put where I drive the person to smack the pile last usually gets the ticket for Yeah...that's usually how it works. However, I am a little suprised that he was the ONLY one to get a ticket. Usually they write everyone a ticket for SOMETHING. A friend even got a ticket for "Driving too fast for conditions" once. He fell asleep and hit a tree. I guess it would be kinda hard to argue that ANY speed while sleeping wasn't too fast.
Dragontail 0 #20 December 24, 2003 Clearly is was a case of feline suicide. I'd say it depends on the type of road and the amount of traffic. Rule of thumb for me is run it over and curse the owners for not taking steps to keep their animal safe.
