Just like us, public figures stumble and say things that don't come out quite right (the difference being that said public figure is under a magnifying glass, and every misstatement or unintended remark gets hyped out of all proportion). I think she was trying to say that some people are so clueless as to not recognize that name, but it ended up sounding demeaning instead. The only thing she should apologize for was for screwing up the statement and not getting her point across.
