Defibulators

That's right, folks; the website authors skipped the spell-checker for all the world to see.

Defibulators are a medical device used for fixing broken lower legs.

I thought they were used for amputating them.

So radiators must be for amputating arms? ;)

I wonder if they cheaped out on the magnets?
I know the ones in my office are very strong. I would say they are as strong if not stronger than a velcro when hoding two piece of fabric together. And I know full well how much it hurts if you get any skin inbetween the two magnets. But that being said, we are talking about magnets and I have no idea what the QA is in assuring that each magnet has the same strength as the next.

I also have those magnets on my jumpsuit, and yes they are strong when they are very close to eachother.
But just adding a few millimeters in between and you lose much of their strenght.
Pulling these magnets straight away from eachother is hard, but if you try having two pices of cloth in between your magnets you will notice that you can easily 'bend' them away quite easily.

how much longer before everyone is doing this?

Probably never. I have personally witnessed two different UPT rigs with magnetic riser covers have the toggles come out in a head down position. It's probably worthy to mention I've never seen it happen otherwise however in my limited experience this could just be a fluke.
One rig it happened 3 times within a few months of being new and required a cut away two times. He sent the rig back for "repairs" and is now testing. So far so good. The other rig is now being used for RW only. He too had to cut away the wrapped up toggle. The owner will not free fly with it. He happens to be the UPT dealer and DZO.
I have an Infinity that has not come open yet and neither has my VooDoo. I'm in the camp of "if it's not broken don't fix it".

How did the toggles get out?
I can understand that the risercovers open but the toggles should be much further down and tight squeezed in between the reserve and the sides of the rig.
Was the canopysizes in this rig correct?
Im not saying its impossible but it would perhaps be more likely to happen if you have smaler canopys than the rig is built for

I'm not sure how they got out but on both rigs and all occasions they came out while flying head down. In both cases the rigs were new and canopies were sized correctly.

I have to admit it is a very smart idea! And looking at these magnets, I have a few in the office, it shouldn't be that hard to be able to update most systems

Why fixing something which is not broken:S
Oh,wait....fashion I know:)

I'd hate to have one of those primitive containers with regular tuck tabs and no magnets. :D

Actually I do love the magnetic riser covers and most of the packers at our dz like the added ease of them too. So far I've never had any problem with them popping open in any way, and haven't heard of anyone else having that problem first hand either.

All of my future containers will have magnetic riser covers... until they come out with something better.... (or more fashionable ;):D)

that's why everyone's jumping squares now; fashion!

:S

i have them, and i love them!

but i'm a fashion-victim anyway, colour-coordinated rig and canopy, and believe it or not, i even choose my reserve to be going with the pattern.. :P

I never said that the magnets are unnecessary. They are really good solution for the riser cover problem on some rigs. Like Vector 3. Like riggerrob said, the tolerance on the stiffener riser cover design is really small. The fabric distribution during the reserve repack must be good in order to make the riser covers perform the way they are designed.
The other rigs with the same problem like V3 are (in my opinion) Icon and Javelin ( the Skyhook design). I will be happy if they switch to magnets.
Other rigs are less sensitive on "poor" packing. Their riser covers perform well and I don't see a reason why they have to be changed.
On the other hand,if a company sell less rigs because their riser covers are not magnetic, eventually they will have to change the design. This is what I meant when I said "fashion"

P.S. Show me round with the performance of a square and I will show you a stiffener riser cover which work as good as the magnetic one;)

my last rig was an older javelin, and you would not believe the stuff that came undone.. and usually i pay a lot attention to my packing!

there's no way in hell i could imagine how ANYTHING could become undone with my micron now..

Yeah, and All Racer 2K3's comes standard with them.

And the Basik 7.

Mike

Can older models of both be retrofitted with magnets?

You said it Rob!!

...................................................................

If you had packed as many Talon prototypes - with tuck tabs - as I have, you would understand how tight the tolerances are on tuck tabs.
Then - just when you think you have perfected a pattern - some field rigger redistributes canopy bulk (in a way never imagined by the designer in his worst drunken nightmare) and you are forced rework the tuck-tab pattern AGAIN to compensate for field riggers who are too lazy to read a manual!!!!!

Bototm line: production tolerances are (1/8 inch) tight on tuck-tabs, but much looser on magnets or Velcro.
